Mound, DeGregory to enter state Hall
Schuylerville native John DeGregory and Saratoga Springs resident Paul Mound will be among those induced to the New York State Baseball Hall of Fame in a ceremony Sunday at the Hilton Hotel in Troy. Reception for the event begins at 4 p.m.
Other inductees to the Hall include former MLB players like Dodgers Hall of Famer Sandy Koufax, New York Yankees fanfavorite Paul O’Neill, Red Sox great Carly Yastrezemski, Andy Van Slyke, Walt Weiss, BJ Surhoff and Shawon Dunston. Former New York Mets general manager Omar Minaya, current YES Network announcer John Sterling, local umpire Andy Yager, MLB umpire CB Bucknor and St. Johnsville’s Phil Schoff are also being inducted.
O’Neill, Yastrezemski and Koufax will not be attending the ceremony.
“We are thrilled to be inducting John and Paul alongside one of the all-time greats of the game — Sandy Koufax,” Rene M. LeRoux, Executive Director of the New York State Baseball Hall of Fame said. “To be inducted this year is a very special honor.”
DeGregory comes from a baseball family that included brothers Dan, Artie and Jimmy, according to LeRoux. DeGregory starred at Siena with Gary Holle and fellow Schuylerville pitcher Kevin Nevins.
Mound managed the Union College baseball team to its fifth consecutive 20-win season this past spring in his seven season in charge — the longest active streak in the Liberty League, according to Union’s website. A 2017 Amsterdam Baseball Hall of Fame inductee, Mound also became just the third coach in program history to reach the 150-career win mark.
Prior to Mound’s arrival at Union, he spent the past 12 years as the head coach and general manager of the Saratoga Stampede, an American Legion team.
His career record with the Stampede is 483-151. That includes three top-eight finishes in New York State. The team won its district twice in the last three years. His 2010 team went 35-8 and won the New York State Championship.
“Paul has dedicated his life to baseball, developing the Saratoga Stampede youth program to the solid, successful program it is today,” LeRoux said.
During his tenure at Saratoga, Mound has helped place many of his players on college rosters and has had several players receive Division I or II baseball scholarships
in the past four seasons.
His other coaching responsibilities include serving as the head coach and player development for Saratoga Central Catholic High School since 2007 and the head varsity soccer coach for SUNY Adirondack since August. Mound, who coached the Saratoga Thunder Softball Program from 1995-99, has also been the director of the Saratoga Summer Baseball Camps since 2006.
