December events set at Moreau Lake State Park

MOREAU, N.Y. » The following events are planned at Moreau Lake State Park in December.

December 1: Mud Pond Hike (8-10 a.m.) Fairly easy, at about 2.5 miles round trip.

December 1: Full Moon Hike (6-9 p.m.) Led by park naturalist.

December 2: Holiday Craft for Kids (10 a.m.-noon) Held at park nature center.

December 5: Cottage Park Hike (10 a.m.-2 p.m.) About 3.5 miles round trip, this is a steep climb to views overlookin­g the Hudson River.

December 6: Red Oak Ridge Hike (10 a.m.-noon) 2.5 miles round trip.

December 7: Pilates in the Park (9:30-10:15 a.m.) Pilates is a method of exercise that consists of low-impact flexibilit­y, muscular strength and endurance movements; done to strengthen core and improve posture, balance and flexibilit­y. This class will cost $15 and will requires bringing your own yoga style mat and water. These classes will last about 45 minutes and must have a minimum of 3 people signed up. Call the park office with 24-hour advanced notice to reserve a spot (518-7930511).

December 7: Knee High Naturalist (10 a.m.) This class is intended for children ages 1-6 and their parents/guardians along with any siblings. Includes a short story or two based on the outdoors followed by a short hike hoping to see wildlife. Registrati­on is necessary with 24-hour advanced notice. Stop at the office first to pay for the event.

December 8: Spring Overlook Hike (8-10:30 a.m.) Steep but short hike up to the Spring Overlook, about two miles round trip.

December 8: Ridge Run Hike (1-4 p.m.) This moderate hike is about 4-plus miles round trip.

December 11: White Birch Loop (10 a.m.-2 p.m.) The first mile is a steep uphill, and then it flattens out but comes to another steep but short section, then leveling out again. This hike is about 3 miles with views of a variety of different tree landscapes. Reservatio­ns are required

December 12: Lake Ann Hike (10 a.m.-1 p.m.) Park educator will lead this hike through part of the woods at Lake Bonita to Lake Ann.

This is a bit of a longer hike but on rather flat land, about 2.5 miles one way to a beautiful bog. There is a lean-to at Lake Ann to stop and have lunch at.

December 13: Lake Bonita Hike (1-4 p.m.) Led by park naturalist.

December 14: Western Ridge/ Baker Trail Loop (9 a.m.-2 p.m.) About 4 miles with some uphills and downhills. Start at the lower

parking lot and hike the Nature trail to Mud Pond to the start of the Western Ridge trail. From there to the Baker trail, then continue up the Baker trail to the Moreau Overlook. From the Overlook trail, back down to the parking lot. Bring snacks, water and a lunch. Meet and pay at the office.

December 13: Lake Bonita Hike (8-10 a.m.) Led by park naturalist.

December 15: Moreau Overlook Hike (1-4 p.m.) Strenuous, but short hikes 0.9 miles up to view of Moreau Lake. December 16: 2017 Eagle Watch (9 a.m.noon ) Weekly Bald Eagle survey. Moreau Lake State Park’s section of the Hudson is home to wintering bald eagles. It is important to monitor their population and health. Bring binoculars.

December 20: Cross Country Ski or Mud Pond Hike (1-4 p.m.) Easy trek around Moreau Lake on the Nature Trail.

December 28: Potter Point Hike (1-3 p.m.) This is a flat, bushwhacki­ng hike.

Programs are held weather permitting and are subject to change. Call the park office to confirm event date, time and location. Participan­ts should be prepared to spend time outside and are encouraged to wear appropriat­e clothing and footwear. There are program fees with all classes. Ask for the price when registerin­g for each class.

Reservatio­ns are required with 24 hours advanced for most activities. If there are no participan­ts signed up, classes can be cancelled at the discretion of the park.

Moreau Lake State Park is located off Northway Exit 17.
