SARATOGA SPRINGS - Dorothy M. Martinez of Saratoga Springs passed away peacefully surrounded by family on December 2nd 2017 after a brief illness. She was 84 years old. Born on June 12th 1933 in Saratoga Springs New York, she was the daughter of the late Raymond Fitzgerald and Mabel Mead Fitzgerald. Mrs. Martinez was married to Thomas J. (Moe) Martinez; the couple was married nearly 50 years at the time of his death in June 2001. Dorothy was a lifelong resident of Saratoga Springs and attended Saratoga Schools. She had a kind and gentle spirit that people were drawn to. Her greatest joy came from spending time with family and friends. Visits over coffee and watching her grandchild­ren at dance recitals and sporting events were favorite pastimes for Dorothy. She enjoyed playing Bocce with friends on Tuesday evenings at the Knights of Columbus. She also enjoyed activities with friends at the Senior Center. Dorothy loved to garden, friends and neighbors would stop to admire her perennial garden and inquire about the variety of flowers. She put her love of gardening into volunteeri­ng for several years with the Westside Neighborho­od Associatio­n planting and maintainin­g flowers in the neighborho­od. She also liked to crochet, especially Afghans which her family loved to receive. In addition to her husband, Dorothy was predecease­d by a daughter Donna Martinez Carpenter, her sisters Lois Benson, Marguerite (Peggy) Fusco, her brother Raymond Fitzgerald and a grandson Jesse Carpenter. Survivors include her son, Dr. Thomas J Martinez III (Darlene) of Saratoga Springs, a daughter, Rose Martinez Byrnes and her husband Timothy of Greenfield, a brother Gerald Fitzgerald and his wife Shirley of Middleton New Hampshire, a sister-inlaw, Lauretta Fitzgerald of Greenfield, four grandchild­ren, Ryan Carpenter and his wife Cara, Emily, Aidan, and Isabel Byrnes, two great grandchild­ren, Quinn and Kelsey and many nieces, nephews and cousins who will all miss her dearly. Friends and family may call at the Tunison Funeral Home 105 Lake Avenue Saratoga Springs New York 12866 from 4 to 7 on Thursday December 7th 2017. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday at 10 a.m. at the Church of St Peter on Broadway in Saratoga Springs.
