MIDDLE GROVE - Thomas M. Alberts, Sr., died Monday, December 11, 2017 at Saratoga Hospital. He was 78. Born on July 3, 1939 in New York City, he was the son of the late Louis and Elizabeth (Tweed) Alberts. Tom was an avid NY Yankees fan and an animal lover. He celebrated being born and raised as a “Bronx -ite” and was a proud American from a family with numerous European background­s, which influenced his life in many ways, not the least of which was in his playing of the bagpipes. He retired to the Saratoga area in 1996. He received a Bachelor of Science degree, Magna Cum Laude, from Fordham University in 1971. Tom enlisted in the US Navy and retired as a Senior Chief Petty Officer from the US Naval Reserve in 1995 following the Gulf War. He worked as a court officer for the United States Supreme Court in the Bronx. While a member of the Court System, he was a Founding Member of the NYS Pipes and Drums Marching Band which frequently marched in nationally televised parades such as the St. Patrick’s Day parades. A Third Degree member of Saratoga Council 246 Knights of Columbus and the Saratoga Assembly 745 K of C, he was a communican­t of St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Greenfield Center. Tom was influentia­l in the re-establishm­ent of the Saratoga Division 1 Ancient Order of Hibernians, a life member and 1994 commander of VFW Post 271; he served as a member of their All-State Team and Dept. of NY District # 2 Safety Chairman in 199798. He was also a Past Commander of American Legion Adirondack Post 70. He is survived by his son, Thomas Jr. of Bath, PA; one brother, Francis Jerome and his wife, Mary; nephews Frank, Robert and Michael; and a greatnephe­w, Brian. In addition to his parents, he is predecease­d by his wife of 35 years, Helen M Scanlan Alberts. Relatives and friends may call from 9:30 to 10:30am Tuesday morning (Dec. 19) at St. Joseph’s Church, 3159 Route 9N, Greenfield Center where a funeral service will be conducted at 10:30am. Burial with military honors will follow at 12:30pm at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Road in Schuylervi­lle. Members of the Saratoga A.O.H. and the Fourth Degree Color Corps will meet at church as honor guards during the wake. The K of C service will begin at 10am.
