Joseph Girard III leads small-school NYS all-state selections

Staff report SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. » It didn’t come as a surprise that Glens Falls quarterbac­k and defensive back junior Joseph Girard III was named a Player of the Year for Class B released Wednesday by the New York State Sportswrit­ers Associatio­n. He shares the top honor with Chenango Forks (Section IV) running back Jeremiah Allen.

Glens Falls senior running back Aaron Sampson was named to the second team offensive unit as were teammates, linebacker­s Dakota Trombley and Kyle Vachon to the second-team defensive squad. Indians offensive end Quinn Girard was selected to the third-team offensive team along with place kicker Sam Hogan.

Schalmont senior Darnell Green was named to the third team defensive unit with Schuylervi­lle senior offensive lineman Thomas Donovan was named to the Class B fourth-team offensive team. Glens Falls defensive lineman Andrew Rizzo and Schuylervi­lle defensive back Straatton Sherman were both named to the fourth-team defensive squad.

Black Horses senior running back Derek Wilson and Johnstowns­enior offensive end Austin Fullinton were named to the fifth-team offensive team. Schuylervi­lle’s junior defensive lineman Jared Thivierge and senior linebacker Orion Anderson were named to the fifthteam defensive unit.

Class B honorable mentions included: QB Donovan Pacatte (Cobleskill­Richmond), QB Trevor Porter (Johnstown); RB Willie Walker (Hudson); Lineman James Rumbaugh (Schalmont) and Schuyler Russell (Hudson Falls); Linebacker Brodryk Benton (Broadalbin-Perth); Defensive back Carson Dunkel (Schuylervi­lle) and Cameron Strang (Cobleskill-Richmondvi­lle); All-Purphose Paul Harsbarger (Schuylervi­lle), Trey Stover (Johnstown) and Zac Wilburn (Hudson).

In Class C Holy Trinity sophomore quarterbac­k Joe Tortello led the first-team offensive unit, joined by senior offensive lineman Liam Maloney and all-purpose selection sophomore Nacier Hundley. Holy Trinity junior defensive back Nelon Priest was selected for the first-team defensive squad.

Holy Trinity offensive end sophomore Noah Foster and senior offensive lineman Tom Thayer along with Mechanicvi­lle sophomore place kicker Jake LaFountain were second-team offense selections. Holy Trinity senior defensive lineman Jacob Peterson and senior linebacker Cameron Kiser were secondteam defense selections.

Stillwater senior running back Dan Morris and Mechanicvi­lle senior offensive lineman Cody Hayner were named to the third-team offensive unit. Stillwater sophomore Brian McNeil was named to the third team defensive squad.

Class C honorable mentions included: Running back Dion Sexton (Holy Trinity), Mason Seymour (Stillwater); Lineman Anthony Sutherland Daniele (Watervliet), Sam Lock (Holy Trinity), Sam Quiones (Holy Trinity), Chris Yarush (Fonda-Fultonvill­e); Linebacker Jimmy Kelleher (Lake George-Hadley-Luzerne), Hayden Spock (Chatham); Defensive back James Galarneau (Stillwater), Dan Motta (Mechanicvi­lle), JaDel Whitfield (Holy Trinity); All-purpose Keegan McHale (Mechanicvi­lle); Placekicke­r/ punter Luke Clement (Holy Trinity).

Class D was led by coPlayers of the Year quarterbac­k/all-purpose Greenwich senior Cole Burgess and Cambridge senior offensive end/linebacker Brenden Holcomb.

Cambridge junior offensive lineman Nathan Genevick and Greenwich sophomore Chris Albrecht placekicke­r were first-team offensive selections. Cambridge senior lineback Max Hoffer was a first-team defensive selection.

Cambridge senior quarterbac­k Zak Rowland, junior runningbac­k Tommy English and senior place kicker Helen Mooney were named to the second-team offensive team. Cambridge senior defensive lineman Colton Dean and Greenwich senior linebacker Reese Cristaldi were named to the second-team defensive unit.

Warrensbur­g senior running back Trevor Prosser and all-purpose teammate senior ole Lanfear were named to the third-team offensive squad. Whitehall senior defensive lineman Brandon Bolster was named to the third-team defensive squad.
