NARCAN TRAINING: This initiative will involve the training of first responders and other likely witnesses of such events what to do in overdose situations.Participants will increase their understanding and awareness, ability to identify risk factors, recognize signs of overdose, and learn proper protocols in administering Naloxone. FUTURE CITY COMPETITION: The award-winning Future City® Competition, now in its 26th year, asks middle school students to respond to the issue of “The Age-Friendly City” by designing innovative solutions that can serve an urban area’s older population. The Capital District competition will be held on Saturday, January 13, at The Armory at Sage College in Albany. There are approximately 400 local students participating in the competition this year, including representatives of Acadia Middle School, Ballston Spa Middle School, Gowana Middle School, Koda Middle School, Maple Avenue Middle School and Richard H. AFGHANISTAN LECTURE: Guest speaker Younus Samadzada presents his perspective on the changing character of religion and culture in Afghanistan. The region has a long history openness to many religions: both Sunni and Shia Muslims, Zoroastrians, Sikhs, Hindus, Jews, Roman Catholics and Buddhists. Very few adherents of most of these religions remain. By the 1950s, the dominant religion had become Sunni Muslim, and both the government and warring factions have instituted strict adherence in recent years. Refreshments at 12:30 p.m. are followed by the 1:15 p.m. program in Room 224, Campus Center, Sage Colleges Albany Campus, New Scotland Ave. at Academy Road, Albany. This free event is presented by the Capital District Humanist Society. HOME MADE THEATER AUDITIONS: Home Made Theater announces open auditions for their April/ May production of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” on Sunday, January 14, from 2 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. (children 9-12) and 5 p.m. - 8 p.m. (adults), and Monday, January 15, from 6:30 p.m. - 8 p.m. (adults) at the Spa Little Theater in Saratoga Spa State Park. There are 48 roles available for actors ages nine and up. Rehearsals will begin March 11. No appointments are necessary. Those auditioning are asked to prepare 16 bars of up-beat music.
