Sage women’s hoops win seventh-straight

ALFRED, N.Y. >> Sage’s women’s basketball team collected their seventh straight win as they beat Alfred University on Friday night, 75-59. The Gators were paced by the play of senior forward Genevieve Schoff (Little Falls, NY/ Little Falls) as she collected 20 points. With the win, Sage is now 11-3 overall and owns a perfect 5-0 record in the Empire 8. Alfred drops to 2-13 overall and 0-7 in the league. Schoff added 20 points after making 9-of-20 field goals, while adding six rebounds, five assists and three steals. She is continuing her climb on the Sage scoring list and she is the program’s No. 2 all-time leading scorer with 1,221 points, just 192 points away from the all-time mark of 1,412 points. Holding the record currently is Jocelyn Naple (1994-1998). Schoff is now just 10 rebounds away from moving into the No. 2 spot in rebounding as she has 778, just behind Amie Jefferson (788, 20112015). Junior guard Kaitlyn Bowman (Dannemora, NY/Saranac) had a double-double with a career-best 18 rebounds. She added 15 points with six assists as well in the contest. Junior guard Emily Parslow (Fonda, NY/ Fonda-Fultonvill­e) tallied 14 points with four three-point baskets to help the Gators to the key conference win. Parslow has now played in 67 career games and is No. 2 with her 136 career threepoint­ers. She moved ahead of Kelly Murphy (772, 19992002) on scoring as she has 776 career points and is now 11th on the scoring list. Bowman surpassed the 600 career point plateau as she checks in with 607 points.

ENGINEERS WIN STREAK SNAPPED AT ITHACA

ITHACA, N.Y. >> Four student-athletes reached double digits in points, including Julie Yacovoni, who had 16 points and 14 rebounds, to lead the Ithaca College women’s basketball team to an 84-63 victory over Rensselaer Polytechni­c Institute (RPI) in a Liberty League contest at Ben Light Gymnasium. The loss snapped a threegame winning streak for the Engineers, who are now 9-5 overall and 5-2 in the conference. The Bombers improve to 10-4 and 5-2. Following a first half in which Ithaca held a 42-38 advantage, the Bombers outscored RPI by eight points (22-14) in the third quarter and nine in the fourth (20-11) for the victory. Junior LaKissa Martin led Rensselaer with a teamhigh 18 points with six rebounds and three steals in 37 minutes. Sam Krumbhaar added 12 points and Elizabeth Eckhardt scored 11 - both in 31 minutes. The Bombers held a lead for nearly all of the first half, but the Engineers were never far behind. IC’s biggest lead of the first quarter came with just three seconds left. Junior Sara Jackson drained a shot from behind the arc to give the Bombers a 27-21 lead heading into the second quarter. The Engineers scored the first three points of the second quarter off a Martin layup and a Sam O’Keefe free throw. The Bombers, however, eventually built their lead back up to six points with just over four minutes left in the half on a Yacovoni fast-break layup. Although the lead fluctuated several times, Ithaca still went into the half with a four-point lead. In the fourth quarter, the Engineers closed the gap back to single digits on two Krumbhaar free throws with just over six minutes left to play. A Yacovoni layup and two free throws from O’Malley gave the Bombers a 74-62 lead with 2:56 left in the game.

SKIDMORE ROUTS BARD

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. » The Skidmore College women’s basketball team got back on track Friday evening in its largest margin of victory of the season, a 65-39 victory over Bard in Liberty League action at the Stevenson Athletic Center. Skidmore snaps a threegame slide, improving to 7-8 overall and 5-3 in league action The Thoroughbr­eds move up to a three-way tie for fourth place in the league standings. Bard falls to 0-14 overall and 0-8 in conference. The Thoroughbr­eds, leading the whole way, kept Bard under 10 points in each of its first three quarters. They held the Raptors to 25.5 percent shooting from the field, a season-best performanc­e by the Skidmore ‘D’. On the other end, the Thoroughbr­eds shot 40.5 percent from the field, getting 30 points from its bench in the victory. Kelly Donnelly led the team with 16 points, shooting a season-best 8-for-10 from the field. She added eight rebounds and three steals. Taylor Ong added a careerhigh 14 points, adding six rebounds. Lilly Berg also tallied a career-high with 11 points off the bench. The Thoroughbr­eds jumped out of the gates with a 10-2 run in the first quarter, and never looked back. After ending the first quarter with a 14-8 lead, Skidmore scored the first six points of the second, extending its lead to as large as 18, at 33-15, off a trey by Veronica Moceri with 52 seconds left in the half. In the third quarter, Skidmore pushed the lead to as high as 33, on a Caroline Merguerian 3-pointer at the 2:43 mark. Playing its bench for most of the second half, Bard outscored Skidmore 15-10 in the final quarter, with Skidmore left Bard with the 26-point victory.

MEN’S BASKETBALL TOM HORVAT SCORES 26 IN RPI LOSS

ITHACA, N.Y. >> Tom Horvat scored 26 points and fellow junior Marcus Giese registered a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds, but it was not enough to help the Rensselaer Polytechni­c Institute (RPI) men’s basketball team overcome a halftime deficit as the Engineers fell to Ithaca College, 75-69, in a Liberty League contest. The Bombers, who led by 14 at halftime, are now 11-4 and 6-2, while RPI falls to 8-7 and 3-5.

SKIDMORE SCORES SEASON-LOW IN LOSS

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. » Bard College held Skidmore to a season-low 58 points on the way to a 63-58 Liberty League win over the Thoroughbr­eds Friday night. The set-back leaves Skidmore with a 9-5 overall and 5-3 Liberty League record. The Raptors are 6-9 and 4-4. Edvinas Rupkus led the Thoroughbr­eds with 17 points, 11 rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Noah Meren added 15 points and Dakpe Yiljep contribute­d 13 points. David Runcie was one of three Bard players in double figures with 17 points and 13 steals. Skidmore led by 10, 48-38 with 10:02 to play, but Bard whittled away the deficit, going ahead 57-56 on a pair of Runcie free throws with 2:35 left. Runcie went 6-for8 from the line the rest of the way for the 63-58 final.

MEN’S HOCKEY RPI LOSES TO BROWN IN FINAL SECONDS

PROVIDENCE, R.I. >> Senior Tim Lappin scored the game-winning goal with three seconds left in regulation to send the Brown University men’s hockey team past Rensselaer Polytechni­c Institute (RPI), 2-1, on Friday night at Meehan Auditorium. With the win, the Bears improve to 6-10-3 overall (5-8-0 ECAC Hockey), while the Engineers drop to 4-17-4 (3-9-2 ECAC Hockey). Lappin (Saint Charles, IL/ Waterloo Black Hawks) broke the tie when he redirected a point shot from freshman Tony Stillwell (Green Bay, WI/Green Bay Gamblers) past RPI freshman netminder Linden Marshall (Victoria, BC/Trail Smoke Eaters) at the edge of the crease. The go-ahead tally, which was Lappin’s sixth of the year, also drew an assist from junior winger Alex Brink (Hamilton, NY/ Boston Jr. Bruins). After a scoreless first period in which Brown held a 14-10 shot advantage, the Engineers were finally able to break the deadlock. Senior captain Jared Wilson (Calgary, AB/Vernon Vipers) netted a power play with just 35 seconds left in the frame to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. Junior Brady Wiffen (St. Mary’s, ON/ Trenton Golden Hawks) won an offensive zone draw back to senior Mike Prapavessi­s (Oakville, ON/Toronto Patriots), who quickly snapped a pass across to the right point. Wilson took the feed and stepped into a hard wrist shot that made its way inside the left post for his sixth tally of the year. Brown drew even at 1-1, midway through the third period. Senior Tyler Bird (Andover, MA/Kimball Union) was credited with his sixth goal of the season, when his centering pass caromed in off the skate of an RPI defenseman. Helpers went to sophomore Brent Beaudoin (Londonderr­y, NH/ Islanders H.C.) and freshman Anea Ferrario (Ogden, UT/ Sioux City Musketeers). RPI finished 1 for 4 on the power play, while the Bears were 0 for 3. Brown freshman goaltender Luke Kania (Chicago, IL/Minnesota Wilderness) turned away 27 of the 28 shots he faced, with Marshall making 41 stops on 43 attempt on goal.

NORWICH DROPS SKIDMORE, 4-1

NORTHFIELD, V.T. >> The Norwich University men’s ice hockey team won its fourth straight game with a 4-2 victory over Skidmore College on Friday night at Kreitzberg Arena in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) action. The first-place Cadets are 12-4-1 and 9-1-1 NEHC. Skidmore (2-15-1, 0-10-1 NEHC) opened the scoring at the 8:17 mark of the first period with Matt Bernot scoring off an assist from Misha Mrotchek. Mrotchek got a stick on a puck while colliding with a NU player and the puck deflected out in front of the net to Bernot who buried a shot into the corner of the net to give the Thoroughbr­eds a 1-0 lead. Ryan Boucher netted his first collegiate goal just 20 seconds later at the 8:37 mark scoring on his backhand on a rebound to tie it 1-1. Skidmore responded at the 12:50 mark to take a 2-1 lead with Brandon Borges shoveling a puck past Cadet goalie Tom Aubrun on the near post after a sneaky pass by Paul Vella from behind the net as he was circling to the other side. Norwich responded again, this time at the 19:23 mark with Felix Brassard blasting a slap shot past Skidmore goalie Brandon Kasel directly off a faceoff win by Boucher. The Cadets took their first lead of the game at the 13:26 mark with Alec Brandrup blasting a slap shot from the point through traffic on the power play to score what would prove to be the game-winning goal. Norwich got some insurance at the 17:35 mark of the third period with Taeron Lewis scoring an insurance tally on the power play again to seal the victory. Kasel made 23 saves for Skidmore to take the loss. Norwich outshot Skidmore 27-26 for the game and finished 2-for-3 on the power play.
