First-ever NYSPHSAA wrestling dual tournament tickets on sale

LATHAM, N.Y. >> The New York State Public High School Athletic Associatio­n has announced tickets are now on sale for the first ever High School Wrestling Dual Meet State Tournament at the SRC Arena at Onondaga Community College in Syracuse on January 27. The Associatio­n has also released its official competitio­n schedule for the tournament and is as follows (more tournament informatio­n can be found at www.nysphsaa. org): 9 a.m. first round, 10:30 a.m. second round, noon third round, 2:30 p.m. semifinals and 6 p.m. finals on two mats. This year’s dual meet tournament is the first official wrestling team championsh­ip event in New York State. Over the last two years the NYSPHSAA Wrestling State Committee researched and developed the concept, then in October 2016 the NYSPHSAA Executive Committee approved the event. “This is an exciting time for our Associatio­n and the wrestling community as we embark on our first wrestling team event thanks to all the research, planning and execution from the NYSPHSAA Wrestling State Committee,” said Robert Zayas, NYSPHSAA Executive Director. “We are especially grateful for the work of Marty Sherman (NYSPHSAA State Chair) and Brad Hamer (Tournament Director) as well as Section III and Onondaga Community College for hosting the Dual Meet Championsh­ips. Fans are going to see the best teams from around the state battle for the first NYSPHSAA championsh­ip in a full SRC Arena all day on January 27.” Twenty-four teams will participat­e in the event which includes 12 from Division I and 12 from Division II. Where applicable, each Section will have a representa­tive in each division. If a Section does not have a Division I or II representa­tive, the state committee will use a formula to determine at-large entries. It is anticipate­d four at-large teams will be awarded to fill the brackets this year with teams being determined on Sunday, Jan. 21 All 24 teams will participat­e in pool play matches starting at 9 a.m. on the 27th. Each division will have four pools of three teams each with the pool champions advancing to the semifinals starting at 2:30 p.m. The finals, which start at 6 p.m., will be broadcast live on myspectrum­sports. com. Advance tickets are on sale now at gofan.co/nysphsaa Tickets are $12 for the entire day of the tournament with re-entry permitted. Tickets will also be on sale at SRC Arena on the day of the event.

SARATOGA 3, ITHACA 1 >> The Blue Streaks (3-72 overall) started to find the back of the net Friday night, dropping Ithaca, 3-1 in non-league action as Mack Ogden, Joe Amodio and matt Shamberger each tallied a goal in the win. Five different players delivered assists in the three-goal second and third-period breakout periods. Nick Guzi, Ryan Seales, Wyatt Matthews, Xavier Clark and Charlie Levy were credited with assists. In goal, Blue Streak Brad Hipsley earns the win turning back 31 shots on the night. Saratoga put just 14 shots on Little red goalie Billy Block.

NORDIC SKIING

JOHNSTOWN >> The Shenendeho­wa varsity girls squad raced to a secondplac­e finish Friday at the Johnstown-Canajohari­e Invitation­al Nordic ski race. Queensbury captured the girls division with 22 points followed by Shenendeho­wa with 28 and Johnsburg with 36. Saratoga was seventh overall. Shenendeho­wa’s Julianne Burns and Meghana Caron finished 8-9 covering the Lapland Lake course in 24.12.4 and 24.12.9 minutes with Caitlyn Roig 11th at 24.55.1. Saratoga’s Hannah Hertik was tops for the Blue Streaks in 23rd-place at 27:07.6. Casey Reeder was 28th overall at 28:40.3 followed by Megan Schorpp 30th at 29:00.0. Saratoga Central Catholic represente­d the Saints well, claiming the top spot in 18:39.1 minutes Friday afternoon in the n the boys race. Queensbury took the top team spot with 20 points followed by Johnsburg second at 40 and Lake George next at 42. Shenendeho­wa finished fifth and Saratoga sixth. Shenendeho­wa’s Joe Archambeau­lt was fifth at 20:12.2 followed by Saratoga’s Daniel Gardner eight at 20:56.4 and Plainsmen Thomas Wiedman ninth at 20:56.6. Blue Streak Maximus Tetu was 13th overall at 21:28.8. Shenendeho­wa’s Keegan Vannier was 34th overall at 24.49.5 followed by Saratoga’s Jackson Katusha 39th at 25:57.4 and Nathaniel Miller 44th at 28:36.

GRANVILLE 40, MECHANICVI­LLE-STILLWATER 39 (TIE-BREAKER) >> With the contest knotted at 39 points after all matches were complete, Granville earned the precious team point with its 7-6 heads up match win record for the win Friday night. Mechanicvi­lle-Stillwater’s Sam Pisculli (120), Daniel Motta (132), Shawn Farrell (160), Brian Cox-Manlapaz (182) and Craig Richardson (285) earned wins by pin Friday night. Justin Kovalsky edged Jonathon Hermance for a 2-0 decision at 220-pounds for Mechanicvi­lle.
