SCIENCE IS SUPER
Elementary school students, parents learn lessons
BALLSTON SPA, N.Y. » The Ballston Spa Central School District’s four elementary school PTAs hosted the annual Super Science Saturday recently and provided elementary students the opportunity to participate in many hands-on science experiments focusing on global climate change.
More than 200 students toured various stations at their own pace to learn more about climate change, participated in a Drain Pipe Regatta and even had the opportunity to construct terrariums.
The Winter 2018 Super Science Saturday event also presented several programs for students and parents including the StarLab Learning Dome where participants took a planetarium adventure learning about stars and galaxies, Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory experiments where students learned about different kinds of power, an overview of the manufacturing process at GlobalFoundries and a variety of climate change presentations provided by CMOST.
Graduate students from the Department of Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences at the University at Albany, SUNY, provided weather related experiments including a cloud in a bottle, flying teabags and a small storm surge activity.
The district also provided a sneak peek and details about the Elementary Science and Engineering Fair, which is scheduled for Saturday, March 10.
The Science Fair is open to grades K-5 and teaches students about the Scientific Method by asking them to do a scientific investigation on a topic area of their choice and prepare a display board to present their findings.
