NYS MILITARY MUSEUM: The New York State Military Museum will host programs that commemorate the nation’s centennial of combat operations in World War I and the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War, along with topics of local interest this winter and spring. March 3, a special screening of the 1940 classic film “The Fighting 69th,” starring James Cagney, based on the World War I exploits of New York’s famous 69th Infantry Regiment. Regimental Historian Bert Cunningham will provide an introduction and WWI artifacts related to the 69th, its commander, Lt. Col. OPERA-TO-GO: Opera Saratoga’s Opera-to-Go productions allow students to experience the thrill of opera - up close and personal. Opera Saratoga’s production of “The Ugly Duckling” is a retelling of Hans Christian Andersen’s beloved fairy tale, with an original score by composer Andrew Duncan, feature soprano Carter Tholl, mezzo soprano Raphaella Medina, tenor Jordan Pitts, and baritone Nicholas Martorano. Brian Gilling serves as the music director and pianist. In addition to Opera Saratoga’s in-school performances, there are seven free public performances of “The Ugly Duckling” scheduled, to ensure families throughout the region have access to opera. Performances will be held on March 3 at 11 a.m. at Saratoga Arts Center, 320 Broadway, Saratoga Springs, and at 2:30 p.m. at the Schenectady Civic Players, 12 S. Church Street, Schenectady. DA VINCI ROBOT: The Saratoga Springs City School District, Saratoga Hospital, and Intuitive Surgical are partnering to provide students and community members with a unique opportunity to “test drive” a robotic surgery system on Wednesday, March 7. Intuitive Surgical will be at Saratoga Springs High School with a complete Da Vinci Robotic Surgical System, identical to the one used by surgeons at Saratoga Hospital. During school hours, students in various science and engineering courses will get a chance to sit at the surgeon’s console and perform “surgery” on tiny inanimate objects, with Intuitive representatives on hand to answer questions. The evening session will be open to the community from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. in the Saratoga Springs High School Teaching Auditorium.
