Burnt Hills’ Ryan earns save percentage award

WOMEN’S FIELD HOCKEY BRITTANY RYAN EARNS SAVE PERCENTAGE AWARD

MANSFIELD, PA. » Brittany Ryan (Burnt Hills, N.Y./ Burnt Hills) and the Mansfield University field hockey team earned NCAA Division II Statistica­l Champion awards for individual and team save percentage during the 2017 season.

Ryan is the 2017 NCAA Statistica­l Champion in individual save percentage for a goalkeeper at .874. That percentage topped all keepers in NCAA Division I, II, and III. Ryan was efficient in goal while ranking fourth in the nation in saves per game at 9.91 and 11th in goals against average at 1.38.

Ryan became the seventh field hockey student-athlete in program history to be named an All-American following the 2017 season picking up 1st Team NFHCA recognitio­n. She was also selected as the ECAC Division II Defensive Player of the Year and was named to 1st Team All-ECAC and 2nd Team All-PSAC honors.

As a team, Mansfield earned NCAA Statistica­l Champion status for posting the best save percentage in the nation at .883. The Mountainee­rs also ranked second in Division II in defensive saves with 16, fourth in saves per game at 10.50, and fifth in penalty corners at 9.78.

Mansfield saw a six-win improvemen­t from a year ago under the direction of third-year head coach Brittany Hansrote who led the Mounties to an 8-10 record in 2017. Two of those eight wins came against nationally ranked opponents with a 1-0 overtime victory at No. 7 Bloomsburg and a 4-0 win against No. 5 Slippery Rock. Following the season, Hansrote was named PSAC Coach of the Year with Ryan, Meghan Griffin, and Katie Lipski each earning all-conference honors.

It marks the first individual NCAA Statistica­l Champion for Mansfield since Jessi Swingle in 2013 and the first team award since 2011. Both awards were for defensive saves.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL SAGE’S ALLISON COLEMAN AND GENEVIEVE SCHOFF HONORED BY D3HOOPS.COM

ALBANY, N.Y. » The Sage Colleges’ women’s basketball team was honored once again with the release of the 2018 D3Hoops.com regional teams. Sage’s women’s basketball head coach Allison Coleman was named the East Coach of the Year, while senior forward Gen Schoff was named the East Region Third Team.

Coleman, who just wrapped her fourth season at Sage led the Gators to a second place showing in the Empire 8 conference regular-season and the team’s first appearance in the women’s basketball tournament as a new member to the league in 2017-2018. The Gators went 18-8 overall with a 12-4 mark in Empire 8 play. The 18 wins this season is tied for the third most in school history with the 2014-2015 team, which also went 18-8 under the guidance of Coleman in her first season at Sage. The Sage women’s basketball coaching staff was also honored as the Empire 8 Women’s Basketball Coaching Staff of the Year by the Empire 8.

Schoff, who earned Empire 8 Player of the Week honors after a banner week that included setting an Empire 8 single-game free throw record with 18 made free throws, is the team’s second leading scorer this season. Over the course of her career, Schoff recorded 33 career doubledoub­les after closing her career with 20 points and 14 rebounds in the Empire 8 semifinals against eventual champion, Stevens. Schoff wraps her amazing career as a four-year starter and all-star having just earned Empire 8 First Team honors on Thursday as the second all-time leading scorer. Schoff is Sage’s No. 2 all-time player in points (1,394), rebounds (871), blocks (128) and game played (106). Schoff finishes with a 13.2 ppg average on her career which is No. 4 all-time, while falling just 19 points shy of breaking Sage’s career scoring mark which stands at 1,412 points and is held by Jocelyn Naple (1994-1998). Schoff is also the all-time free throw leader at Sage having made 405 of 544 attempts for a .744 free throw percentage which is sixth best as well.

BASEBALL AUSTIN LAWRENCE RECOGNIZED WITH WEEKLY LEAGUE AWARD

TROY, N.Y. » Rensselaer Polytechni­c Institute (RPI) student-athlete Austin Lawrence of East Greenbush 12144 has been recognized by the Liberty League with a weekly conference award.

BASEBALL WEEKLY HONOR ROLL: Austin, an infielder, hit a team-high .500 (4 for 8) last week, with two runs and three runs batted in. He also had a walk as the Engineers went 1-1.

MEN’S LACROSSE CONNOR FIELDS HONORED AS BALTIMORE SUN NATIONAL PLAYER OF THE WEEK

ALBANY, N.Y. » Connor Fields continues to pick up hardware as he has been selected as the Baltimore Sun National Player of the Week, selected by the publicatio­n on Tuesday.

Fields becomes the third UAlbany player to earn Baltimore Sun National Player of the Week honors this season, along with Tehoka Nanticoke and TD Ierlan. UAlbany players have three of the five national weekly honors this season.

The senior attack helped UAlbany win of pair of road games this week, including 19-8 over UMass and 11-10 over #2 Maryland, solidifyin­g UAlbany’s place as the #1 team in the nation.

He started the week with a career-high 12 points, off five goals and seven assists, in the win over UMass, adding five ground balls. He followed with a six-point performanc­e at Maryland off four goals and two assists, scoring the gamewinnin­g goal with 1:16 remaining and grabbing the ground ball on the final faceoff to help secure the win.

Fields was selected as the America East Offensive Player of the Week on Monday.
