ALBANY POETS: In August 2012, a team of spoken word artists traveled from Albany to Charlotte, North Carolina to compete against 71 other teams from all over the country. They were the first team to represent Albany in the National Poetry Slam. Local poets Elizabeth Gordon, D. Colin, ILLiptical (Michael Sloman), Shannon Shoemaker, Algorhythm (Aron Ervin), Poetic Visionz (Darian Gooden), and Mojavi will perform and talk about the experience of being the first group of poets from the area to Nationals in “Getting Down to Brass Tacks,” on Thursday, March 29, at 7 p.m. at The Low Beat, 335 Central Avenue, Albany. FREE GARDENING CLASS:
To help local gardeners to “Get Growing!” this season, Balet Flowers & Design, a Malta flower farm and garden design business, will offer a free presentation at Saratoga Springs Public Library on March 29 at noon. Suzanne Balet Haight, owner of Balet Flowers & Design, will talk about how to add continuous color to a garden for blooms throughout the growing season. HORSE EXPLORERS: The National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame presents an ongoing children’s educational program series called “Horse Explorers.” Recommended for ages 3-6, “Horse Explorers” is a hands-on series intended to creatively educate children about horses by developing age-appropriate skills in disciplines including art, literacy, science and math. The theme for March 29 is “Exercise.” 10:30 a.m. to 11:15 a.m., Horseplay Gallery. Children are free to attend with a paid accompanying adult. There will be no program on April 5. JAZZ AT THE SPRING: On March 29, tenor saxophonist Joel Frahm makes an eagerly anticipated return with Joe Barna’s Sketches of Influence in the next event in Capital District Jazz’s “Jazz at the Spring” series at the Spring Street Gallery. 7:30 p.m., 110 Spring Street, Saratoga Springs. $15 in advance, $20 at the door. TANG MUSEUM: The Schick Art Gallery at Skidmore College hosts an exhibit by multimedia artist Matthew Bollinger from March 22 through April 22. Matt Bollinger: DIY is a solo exhibition of paintings, drawings and videos, including stop-motion animations. Bollinger will give an artist’s talk from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, March 29 in the Somers Room of the Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery.
VIETNAM WAR COMMEMORATION: The Saratoga National Cemetery and the Honor Guard Association will participate in a recognition ceremony on Thursday, MArch 29, at 11 a.m., at the National Cemetery, 200 Duell Road, Schuylerville. The commemoration recognizes all men and women who served on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces during the United States’ involvement in Vietnam (November 1, 1955 - May 7, 1975). The commemoration makes no distinction between Veterans who served in-country, in-theater, or were stationed elsewhere during those years. You do not have to be a veteran to attend all are welcome.
