SLINGERLAN­DS – Nancy Briwa Veeder passed on to be with her husband in heaven on Sunday, March 25, 2018. Born in 1926 in Hudson, NY, she was the daughter of the late Charles Briwa, Sr. and Helen (Taylor) Briwa. She was raised on a dairy farm in Claverack, where she and her brother the late Charles Briwa, Jr., were home schooled and her love of horses began. Nancy was married to the late Harold G. Veeder, a real estate developer and they lived in Lake George, NY and built the Holiday Inn Motel. They enjoyed antique motor boats and Adirondack history together. Nancy is survived by Dr. Nancy Veeder, a step-daughter who was the head of the School of Social Work at Boston College. Nancy was predecease­d by her younger step-daughter Katrina Schulhof, a director of the Adopted Family Rights Council, in Pittsburgh. She is survived by her nephews Charles Briwa (Alexia) of Albany and Bill Briwa (Holly) of Yountville, CA; also survived by cousins and great nieces and nephews. Nancy was predecease­d by her brother Charles Briwa, Jr. and her companion of 30 years, Harry Downie, Capital District radio personalit­y with whom she shared horseback trail rides and going to the Saratoga Racetrack. Other family, friends, and business associates will miss Nancy dearly. Nancy Briwa Veeder was the President of businesses in Latham and Lake George, and was also a real estate broker. In addition to the real estate firm, Nancy’s business holdings included partnershi­ps which owned and operated the Residence Inn by Marriott and constructe­d the Fairfield Suites Inn by Marriott in Malta. Prior to 1991, for over 25 years, she owned and operated the Holiday Inn in Lake George. She also owned and operated a Northland Motor Lodge in conjunctio­n with the Holiday Inn. As a franchise holder, Nancy won awards for unique restaurant facilities. She served on the board of the Holiday Inn Internatio­nal Society of Franchise Holders, serving on the marketing committee, the convention conference, and the Board of Regions for Holiday Inn University. In 1986, Nancy received her franchise for the Residence Inn, Latham, adjacent to the Albany Airport. From 1953-1990, Nancy owned and operated the Country Miss Apparel Shop. Nancy earned an associate’s degree from Centenary College in 1946 and subsequent­ly studied at NYU, College of St. Rose and Adirondack Community College. She was a director of Key Corp. where she was the Chairman of the Community Responsibi­lity Committee until May of 1997. She served on the Executive and on the Audit Committees. She also served on the Regional Board of Key Corp. Nancy was also a director of the Albany County Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Capital District Healthcare Coalition, serving on their Executive Committee. At Rensselaer Polytechni­c Institute, Nancy was a member of the Board of Overseer’s in the school of Management. She also worked on scholarshi­p programs and student needs, as well as the Patroon Fund. She was on the President’s Circle of Centenary College, Hackettsto­wn, NJ where she helped to serve the students with financial aid, endowment funds, and through new constructi­on of college classrooms and dormitorie­s, as well as a new equine training facility. She was also a member of the Boy Scouts of America, Twin Rivers Council nominating committee, nominating members to the board to work with boys of all economic levels. As a YMCA participan­t, Nancy was involved in the fund raising for new facilities at many locations such as Lake George, Glens Falls, Clifton Park, and Guilderlan­d. Calling hours will be held Thursday, March 29 from 3:00-6:00 pm in the Daniel Keenan Funeral Home, 490 Delaware Ave. All are invited to attend.
