Yager and Butler combine for shutout

Sports staff MAPLE HILL » Maple Hill pitchers Alec Yager and Nick Butler combined for a threehit shutout of Cairo-Durham, 3-0, Wednesday afternoon in the Patroon League opener for both squads.

Yager went four innings, giving up three hits and striking out four batters with a walk. Butle came on to pitch three hitless innings for the Wildcats, striking out four and also walking one batter.

Butler did damage at the plate also, going 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and driving in two runs. Christian Beber went 1-for-2 with a run scored and walk in the win for Maple Hill. Ryler Hanrahan was 1-for-2 with a run scored. MAPLE HILL 9, CAIRO-DURHAM 8 » The Wildcats rallied back with two runs in their final at-bats to drop Cairo-Durham in the Patroon Conference opener for both squads Wednesday afternoon.

Maple Hill’s Alysa Houghtalin­g went the distance giving up six earned runs on nine hits, walking seven batters and striking out nine.

At the plate the Wildcats were led by Houghtalin­g’s 4-for-4 day with three runs driven in with Arianna Papas also raking with her 3-for-5 afternoon, including a double, two RBI and three runs scored. Paige Bleau went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Lilly Tedford went 1-for-4 with a double and two RBI.

“This was an incredible game with lots of momentum swings, Cairo-Durham is a tough team to beat,” Maple Hill coach Pat Austin said. “They put the ball in play and are tough outs. The Poulsen girls (Jenna 3-for-3, Jolie 3-for-4) really played well and (Sarah) Sharkey did some damage (2-for-2 2 doubles).

“I really liked our approach at the plate today. The top of our lineup looked really good and the bottom stepped it up in the last inning when we needed them the most and Arianna came through with the walk off. I’m really happy with how our girls fought back and this was a great way to start our season.” LASALLE 17, AVERILL PARK 2 » LaSalle’s Sebastian Geiger had seven goals for the Cadets in Thursday afternoon’s non-league contest with Rennselaer County. Corbin Lafleur put four into the cage to go along with his three-assist day for the Cadets. Sam Haita added three goals for the hat-trick as Nick Zalucky also tallied two goals with Erik Zimmermann scoring once..Louis Zalucky was credited with two assists on the day and Antonio Pallozzi one. Mike Scott made two saves in goal for LaSalle. BURNT HILLS 12, QUEENSBURY 11 » In a wild seasonopen­ing non-league contest, Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake edged Queensbury 12-11 at Centennial Field in Burnt Hills Thursday night.

Ty McHerron tallied six goals for the Spartans in the win as Caeden Lapietro tallied two goals and three assists. Jacob Bach along with Mike Levan each had a goal and an assist.

Queensbury was led by Alex Chirgwin with four goals and an assist. Nico Mattia and Kyle Sokol each tallied a pair of goals and an assist in the loss. Sean Collins finished with a goal and two assists with Dawson LaLuna and Sam Benedetto each tallying a goal.

Queensbury’s Nico Mattia secured 18 face-offs out of 26 attempts Thursday night with Kellen Gannon turning back seven shots in the cage for the Spartans of the North Country. RYE 12, SHENENDEHO­WA 6 » The Shenendeho­wa Plainsmen fell to Rye in its season opener on the road Thursday afternoon, shut out in the opening halves.

Senior middie Justin Leblanc led the Plainsmen with two gaols and an assist on the day, senior attack Patrick Nagy followed with two goals of his own. Junior attack Eric Makhatadze, senior middie Jack Hyde and senior attack Dean Cannon were each credited with a goal. Senior goalie Brady Olsen turned back 15 Rye shots.
