The Saratogian (Saratoga, NY)

More than just a breather needed

-

It appears it is not an end to the rancor surrounding charter change that Gordon Boyd is really calling for in his recent letter to the editor, but only a pause.

Boyd writes of giving the community “a breather” and says “FOR NOW advocates of Charter change need to lower their voices…”

Saratoga needs more than just a breather.

We need a permanent end to the misrepresentations, exaggerations and mean spiritedness that characterized so much of Mr. Boyd’s and his group’s campaign for charter change.

Carol Joyce Saratoga Springs efforts, yet New York has not restricted the practice of conversion therapy. Conversion therapy has shown to have undoubtedly detrimental consequences, such as increased risk of depression, substance abuse and suicidal ideation. In addition, individuals subject to the treatment experience increased social isolation and self-hatred.

New York State must pass Bill A.3977/S.26 to condemn Conversion Therapy and Sexual Orientation Change Efforts. This bill is not outlawing a therapy, since homosexuality is not a disorder. Acquiring a professional license to provide mental health care suggests a certain level of training, and conversion therapy should not be seen as a legitimate nor professional practice. Therefore, this activity should be grounds for professional misconduct, since it results in lifelong negative emotional consequences. We are trying to raise awareness to prohibit the practice of licensed mental health professionals having the ability to attempt to change a minor’s sexual orientation. By passing this bill, this type of activity would be defined as misconduct, and would result in disciplinary action, such as losing licensure.
