Greenfield man charged in shooting

GREENFIELD, N.Y. » A Greenfield man was arrested after shooting his girlfriend in the head, Saratoga County sheriff’s deputies said.

Stephen Lerario, 42, was charged with first-degree assault, a felony.

Deputies said they responded at about 8:32 p.m. Saturday to a reported domestic incident at 353 Grange Rd., Lot 3, in the town. The residence was unoccupied, but while at the scene Saratoga Hospital reported a female had been brought into the emergency room with an apparent gunshot wound to the head, deputies said. The female was identified as residing at the Grange Road residence, and was subsequent­ly transferre­d to Albany Medical Center.

Deputies said they charged Lerario, who resides with the victim, after an investigat­ion. Lerario is accused of firing a round from a shotgun at the victim, striking her in the head, deputies said.

The victim - Katie M. Gilbert, 33 - underwent emergency surgery at Albany Medical Center and is currently listed in critical condition, deputies said Sunday afternoon.

Lerario and Gilbert have been identified as having a boyfriend/girlfriend relationsh­ip, and it is believed the incident was a result of a domestic dispute, deputies said.

Lerario was arraigned by Greenfield Town Justice Deborah Hopkins and sent to the Saratoga County Jail without bail.

The incident remains under investigat­ion and additional charges may be filed, deputies said.
