PLATTSBURG­H, N.Y. >> Senior center fielder Felicia Torres (Middletown, N.Y./ Pine Bush) hit a walk-off, two-run double in the bottom of the seventh in game one of a non-conference doublehead­er to help the Plattsburg­h State softball team defeat St. Lawrence University, 5-4. The Cardinals then topped the Saints, 9-0, in game two, with freshman third baseman Bella Spadinger (Loudonvill­e, N.Y./Shaker) providing a game-ending two-run home run in the home half of the sixth. Spadinger went 1-for-3 in the opener and catcher Jennifer Groat (Ballston Spa/ Ballston Spa H.S.) ent 1-for3 with a double, a run scored and a walk in the win. In the nightcap Groat’s hot-hitting continued with a 2-for-3 stint with a home run and two RBI. She was joined by fellow-Cardinal, Spadinger with her own roud-tripper on her 3-for-4 night and five RBI. Plattsburg­h State rises to 12-11 overall with the wins and next hosts SUNY Potsdam in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doublehead­er on Saturday, April 14, at 12 p.m. St. Lawrence drops to 8-8 overall with the losses and next hosts Ithaca College in its Liberty League-opening doublehead­er on Saturday, April 14, at 1 p.m.

COHOES’ ISABELLA DECHIARO LEADS SIENA IN LOSS TO ‘CUSE

LOUDONVILL­E, NY >> ACC foe Syracuse swept Siena Softball in non-conference doublehead­er action at Siena Field. The Orange took the opener 6-3 and the nightcap 7-0. Game One: Syracuse 6, Siena 3 Syracuse (20-17) scored three runs in the first inning and added three more insurance tallies late to double up Siena (9-17) in the opener. Freshman right fielder Isabella DeChiaro (Cohoes/ Cohes H.S.) led the Saints with both a pair of hits and RBI, while Madysen Cossack scored twice. In the nightcap, In the second contest, Syracuse blew open what had been a pitcher’s duel early with a six-run sixth inning to complete the sweep and improve to a perfect 12-0 in the all-time series. DeChiaro recorded the lone Siena hit with a clean single to center with two outs in the bottom of the fourth.

SHEN’S KELLY BARKEVICH HOMERS FOR UALBANY

ALBANY, N.Y. >> The UAlbany softball team split the double header with Binghamton on April 11th. UAlbany opened gameplay with a 10-0 win against Binghamton. Binghamton retaliated in the second game, coming away victorious with a 6-5 win. Junior third baseman McKenzie Bump (Averill Park/ Averill Park H.S.) led off the first contest with a walk and then came around to score for the Great Danes, scoring again and earning an RBI after getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. In the nightcap, Bump went 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Sophomore first baseman Kelly Barkevich (Clifton Park/Shenendeho­wa) went 1-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI. In the second contest, Barkevich was 2-for-3 with a home run for UAlbany. UAlbany will play a three game series in Hartford, Connecticu­t on April 14th and 15th.

GUILDERLAN­D GRAD VICTORIA GRECO 2-FOR-3 IN RPI LOSS

WILLIAMSTO­WN, Mass. >> Rensselaer Polytechni­c Institute traveled to No. 13 Williams College on Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference doublehead­er. The Ephs, the first nationally ranked team the Engineers have faced this season, swept RPI 13-2 in six innings in game one and 5-0 in game two. RPI senior second baseman Victoria Greco (Guilderlan­d/Guilderlan­d H.S.) went 2-for-3 with a run scored in the opener and also stole a base for the Engineers. Senior first baseman Chelsea Elliott (Latham/Shaker H.S.) went 0-for-1 in both contests Wednesday. RPI returns to Troy for a set of Liberty League double headers against Rochester 3 p.m. Friday and RIT 1 p.m. Saturday.

BASEBALL ‘TOGA GRAD DANNY HOBBS ON THE BUMP TWICE FOR SIENA

BRONX, N.Y. >> Siena Baseball split a pair of scheduled seven-inning non-conference contests with Fordham in the Bronx. The Rams rallied with six unanswered runs to walk off with an 8-7 win in eight innings in the opener, while the Saints salvaged the doublehead­er with a 5-3 triumph in the nightcap. Left-hander Shane Barringer (Saratoga/Saratoga Springs H.S.) started the contest, pitching one scoreless inning and giving up two hits for Siena. Sophomore right fielder Zach Durfee (Ballston Spa/ Ballston Spa H.S.) 1-for-3 with a run scored while sophomore right-handed reliever Danny Hobbs (Saratoga/Saratoga Spring H.S.) pitched two innings of relief. He gave up a run on two hits and struck out two batters. In the nightcap, freshman third baseman Tim Carroll (Ballston Lake/LaSalle Institute) went 1-for-2 and sophomore center fielder Matt Hamel (Gansevoort/ Christian Brothers Academy) went 1-for-1 and stole a base. Hobbs was called on again in the second contest, pitching one inning, giving up a run on two hits and again striking out two batters.

TOGA GRAD NICK KONDO KEY SACRIFICE FLY IN UALBANY WIN

ALBANY, N.Y. >> UAlbany baseball snapped a threegame losing streak with a hard-fought, 3-2 victory over Manhattan Wednesday at Varsity Field. Sophomore second baseman Nick Kondo (Saratoga/Saratoga Springs H.S.) hit a sacrifice fly to right field, allowing Lagravines­e to score to tie the game at two apiece. With two outs in the inning, Kenny Hayden reached safely on an error by Manhattan’s shortstop, which allowed Ryan Hernandez to score from third, bringing the final score to 3-2 in favor of the Great Danes. “Nothing has been easy for us. I’m really proud of the way the guys hung in there,” UAlbany coach John Mueller said. “I know both teams were a little shorthande­d with playing multiple games this week. It was a really well pitched game to be honest. “I thought Manhattan did a great job keeping us offbalance with the guys they brought in. I’m really happy with the way our guys threw the ball today. One earned run in nine innings is a testament to that. Offensivel­y we have to keep working, but I think one of these weekends we’re going to erupt and we hope that it’s this weekend when Stony Brook rolls in.” UAlbany will host a threegame series against Stony Brook this weekend. Due to inclement weather, the series has been moved to Friday/Saturday from Saturday/Sunday.

HOST OF LOCAL ARMS THROW IN UNION’S WIN OVER MCLA

AMSTERDAM, NY >> The Union College baseball team strung together 19 hits under the lights at Shuttlewor­th Park en route to a 15-0 win over MCLA on Wednesday night. The 19 hits and 15 runs are second most by the Dutchmen this season, who are now 14-4 on the season and undefeated in their last eight games. Freshman second baseman Joey Palko (Waterford/ Shenendeho­wa) went 1-for-1 with a run scored for the Dutchmen. On the mound, senior right-hander Eric Beer (Wilton/Saratoga Springs H.S.) pitched one scoreless inning. He walked one batter in relief and freshman lefty Steve Acquario (Loudonvill­e/ Shaker H.S.) pitched one inning, walking two batters. Locally, MCLA sophomore third baseman Kevin Speach (Clifton Park/ Shenendeho­wa) pitched two innings giving up two earned runs on three hits. He walked one batter and struck out one.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE RPI EDGES UNION IN CROSS-TOWN BATTLE

TROY, N.Y. >> Junior Maddy Aslansan scored a gamehigh six goals to lead the Rensselaer Polytechni­c Institute (RPI) women’s lacrosse team to a 12-9 victory over Union College, in a Liberty League contest at Renwyck Field on Wednesday night. With the win, the Engineers improve to 6-3-1 overall (4-2 Liberty League), while the Dutchwomen drop to 0-9 (0-5 Liberty League).. Freshman midfielder Caroline Hirt (East Greenbush/ Columbia H.S.) saw action in the local battle, turning the ball over once during her shifts Wednesday.

SIENA FALLS TO NIAGARA 16-8

NIAGARA, N.Y. >> Siena Women’s Lacrosse fell 16-8 to Niagara on Wednesday afternoon. Annie Brennan scored a career-high four goals in the loss. Rachel MacCheyne led all scorers with six points. She recorded four goals and dished out two assists for Niagara (5-7, 2-1). Caroline Crump added four goals and one assist, while Hailey D’Hont tallied a hat trick in the win. Bennan led the Saints (4-9, 0-4) with four goals. Julia Pelcher added two goals for the Saints. Sammy Horton stopped 11 shots in the cage. Junior midfielder Katie Zilka (Saratoga/Queensbury H.S.) picked up two ground balls for the Saints.

A.P. GRAD SAVANNAH MASON GAINS ON SAGE GROUND BALL LIST

ONEONTA, N.Y. >> The Sage Colleges’ women’s lacrosse team visited Hartwick College on Wednesday afternoon for an Empire 8 contest. The Hawks earned the 23-3 win to improve to 7-3 overall and 3-1 in the league, while Sage drops to 2-7 overall and 1-4 in the league. Hrtwick held a 13-1 lead at the intermissi­on and was paced by the play of Ashley Werner who finished with eight goals, while Hailey Poller added nine points on one goal with eight assists. GinaMarie Wilson added four goals as well for the Hawks. Senior midfielder Nikki Pedone (Ballston Lake/ Ballston Spa H.S.) picked up five ground balls for Sage in the loss. Senior middie Ellen Abbott (East Greenbush/Averill Park H.S.) grabbed two ground balls and created three turnovers with grad student attack Savannah Mason (Wynantskil­l/Averill Park H.S.) picked up two ground balls, putting her fourth in career ground balls with 80 all-time with Sage. Freshman attack Alex Franco (Ballston Spa/Ballston Spa H.S.) picked up a ground ball for the Gators. Locally for Hartwick, sophomore Taylor Manzelli (Watervliet/Shaker H.S.) scored a goal, picked up a ground ball and caused a turnover. POTSDAM, N.Y. >> The Plattsburg­h State men’s lacrosse team grinded out an 11-9 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) win over SUNY Potsdam on Wednesday evening under the lights at Maxcy Turf Field. Potsdam senior face-off specialist Marc Leveroni (Ballston Lake/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake H.S.) picked up two ground balls in the win.
