UAlbany alumna Chichester places fifth in Boston Marathon

Chichester had run the Boston Marathon three times since 2012. She currently resides in Brooklyn and is a member of the Dashing Whippets Running team. She started in the marathon’s third corral (the first corral being reserved for “elite” runners) and worked her way up to fifth place by the end of the course.

Competing for UAlbany in the middle 2000’s, Chichester ranks 38th in cross country program history in the 6K with a personal best of 23:13.72. women’s lacrosse team took down No. 20 Notre Dame, 10-7, on Wednesday at Casey Stadium for the Great Danes’ seventh straight win.

UAlbany, which was hosting Notre Dame for the first time in any sport, led the Irish for the final 39 minutes, 29 seconds of the game.

Rickert added an assist for her third-career fivepoint game. Her afternoon included a highlight-reel, behind-the-back goal that gave UAlbany a three-goal lead in the second half.

Sam Tortora also had four points (two goals, two assists).

UAlbany scored first when Tortora connected on a free-position shot for a 1-0 lead 3:22 into the game. After Notre Dame, of the Atlantic Coast Conference, scored twice, Tortora fed Rickert for her first goal, tying the game at 2.

The Irish regained the lead, 3-2, but UAlbany answered with a four goalspurt. Rickert’s two goals bookended one each from Powlin and Shenendeho­wa graduate Kendra Harbinger, giving the Great Danes a 6-3 lead at halftime.

In the second half, with UAlbany leading 6-4, Rickert accepted a feed from Tortora in front of the cage, spun and scored from her backhand, putting UAlbany ahead by three again with 22:02 left.

Notre Dame cut the lead to two twice more, but goals from Harbinger and Tortora answered on each occasion.

Bethlehem graduate Kathryn Sancilio made it 10-6 UAlbany with 5:14 to play.

Erin Leghart made five saves to earn the win in goal. ALBANY, NY » What started five decades ago with some flyers around campus and a meeting of 20 students in the basement of Waterbury Hall has become one of the top men’s lacrosse programs in the nation.

Now, the University at Albany men’s lacrosse team is celebratin­g its 50th anniversar­y by recognizin­g some of the best studentath­letes in the program’s rich history.

UAlbany has chosen 54 players for its “All 50Team,” which spans the program’s inception as a club team in 1968 to the present day. Players were chosen by a committee of past and present players and coaches, including: Steve Jakway (’71); David Armstrong (’73); Mike Motta (’74); Mark Wimmer (’93); Steve O’Shea, head coach, 1988-1994; Scott Marr, head coach, 2001-present; Liam Gleason (’07); Merrick Thomson (’07) and Derrick Eccles (’16).

Several members of the All-50 Team will be recognized during halftime of Friday’s annual “Spring Stomp” game against Binghamton. Faceoff is at 7:00 p.m. in Tom & Mary Casey Stadium. Members of the team also will be at the Men’s Lacrosse Alumni and Friends brunch Saturday morning in the SEFCU Arena Hall of Fame room.

The UAlbany men’s lacrosse program began as a club team in 1968, after Steve Jakway started drumming up interest around campus by placing flyers and gathering about 20 men together for a first meeting. Two seasons later, the club team’s record was 14-1-1. The program was granted varsity status in 1970.

UAlbany has gone on to compete in nine Division I NCAA Tournament­s, win eight America East championsh­ips and have three players win the prestigiou­s Tewaaraton Trophy. Five UAlbany players have been named First-Team AllAmerica­ns.
