Park sets events for May

MOREAU, N.Y. » The following events are scheduled at Moreau Lake State Park in May.

May 7 -- Meandering Mondays (10 a.m.) This is the first of a series to get out and go hiking. This hike is along the Mud Pond Trail, an easy, flat and short route. Adults 62 and under are $2. Children and seniors are $1. Meet at the office. Rating: Beginner.

May 8 -- Slithering Snakes (4-5 p.m.) Learn about the different kinds of snakes in the park and the Nature Center, including habitat, predators, prey and snake habits.

May 11 -- Wetland Trail Hike (1-3 p.m.) A park naturalist will lead this short easy hike around the back pond into the wetland area to see birds, ducks and turtles. Rating: Beginner.

May 12 -- Moreau Kayak Trip (1-3 p.m.) Park Naturalist will lead this beginner’s paddle around the lake pointing out signs of spring.

May 14 -- Meandering Mondays (10 a.m.) This is the second of a series to get out and go hiking, this time along the Turkey Path Tail which has some ups and downs. Adults 62 and under are $2. Children and seniors are $1. Meet at the office. Rating: Moderate.

May 14 -- Friend’s Meeting (6 p.m.) The Friends of Moreau Lake State Park is a non-profit organizati­on dedicated to the support and promotion of environmen­tal education programs and other activities at Moreau Lake State Park. New members are always welcome.

May 15 -- Kid’s Birding (9 a.m.) Walk to a songbird viewing blind with some binoculars and bird field guides and try to scope out the birds. Fee is $1 per child.

May 18 -- Slithering Snakes (4-5 p.m.) Learn about the different kinds of snakes in the park and the Nature Center, including habitat, predators, prey and snake habits.

May 21 -- Meandering Mondays (10 a.m.) This is the third of a series to get out and hike, this time along the Baker Trail which has a little bit of an incline up to the Moreau Overlook. Adults 62 and under are $2. Children and seniors are $1. Meet at the office. Rating: Moderate.

May 22 -- Mud Pond Hike (10 a.m.-noon) A pretty flat hike, starting off on the nature trail and heading out to Mud Pond, about 2.5 miles round trip. Fees apply. Rating: Beginner. May 22 --Turtle Talk (3-4 p.m.) Learn about turtle habits, habitat and diet followed by walk on the beach with the Nature Center’s resident turtles. Fee is $1 for children and seniors, $2 for others. Visitors are asked to pay at the park office.

May 23 -- Composting Basics (7-8 p.m.) A beginner course to learn how to compost from master gardener. Fee is $1 children and seniors, $2 for adults.

May 26 -- Hudson River Kayak (1-4 p.m.) Park Naturalist will lead this paddle along the river pointing out signs of wildlife while teaching strokes and kayaking safety.

May 28 -- Meandering Mondays (10 a.m.) This is the fourth hike of a series, this time to White Birch Trail which starts with a steep incline then has some ups and downs along the way. Adults 62 and under are $2. Children and seniors are $1. Meet at the of-

fice. Rating: Advanced.

May 29 -- Full Moon Hike (7:30-9:30 p.m.) Park Naturalist will point out flora and fauna as the sun is setting Program fees apply. Rating: Beginner.

May 31 -- Moreau Kayak Trip (2-4 p.m.) Park Naturalist will lead this beginner’s paddle around the lake pointing out signs of spring.

Reservatio­ns in advance are required for most activities.

Programs are held weather permitting and are subject to change. Call the park office to confirm event date, time and location. Participan­ts should be prepared to spend time outside and are encouraged to wear appropriat­e clothing and footwear. There are program fees with all classes and some other activities.

If there are no participan­ts signed up, classes can be cancelled at the discretion of the park.
