NORTHSHIRE BOOKSTORE:

On June 1, 1943, Navigator Charles Lewis was declared missing in action. On December 3, 1944, Rifle Company I, 3rd Battalion, attacked the town of Lucherberg, Germany and Lewis’ younger brother Ben was among the American GIs taken prisoner. BALLSTON SPA MEMORIAL DAY PARADE:

A wreath ceremony will take place at the bridge over the Kayadeross Creek at 9 a.m. to start the procession, which will continue along milton Avenue to Front Street, ending at the Memorial Park on Low Street, next to Ballston Spa Public Library. There will be a ceremony and speakers at the memorials. The parade is organized by American legion Post 234 and VFW Post 358.

BATTENKILL RUNS THROUGH IT:

The 8th Annual Battenkill Runs Through It River Festival highlights the Battenkill which runs through Southern Washington County and aims to promote the 7 acre park known as the Greenwich Town Beach as potentiall­y one of the area’s best natural assets. Teaching environmen­tal awareness in a fun and engaging way will happen with the River Watch Discovery Kit, fly fishing demonstrat­ions, riparian buffer planting informatio­n, free canoe and kayak rides, a scavenger hunt and the popular Picky Bugs Table.

U.S. Grant Cottage State Historic Site at 1000 Mt. McGregor Road, Wilton will open for the 2018 season Memorial Day weekend with new exhibits and the return of a popular program highlighti­ng Cottage caretaker and Civil War veteran Oliver Pendelton Clarke and his wife Martha. On May 27 at 1 p.m., reenactors Steve Trimm and Melissa Trombley-Prosch will portray the Clarkes as they share reflection­s on their life together on Mt. McGregor in the setting of Memorial Day 1907. Join local wildlife ecologist and artist Steve Sanford and the Agricultur­al Stewardshi­p Associatio­n (ASA) on Tuesday, May 29 for a bird walk at the conserved White Oak Farm in Buskirk. The walk will begin at 5:30 a.m. and stroll through farm fields and woods to a large beaver pond. Steve will arrive at 4:30 a.m., so anyone wanting to hear owls or other early sounds can assemble earlier. The walk is for beginner and expert birders alike. Free movies in Wiswall Park are back for the eleventh summer in a row, presented by the Ballston Spa Business and Profession­al Associatio­n, as part of its monthly First Friday activities.
