Sunday, June 10 BEEKMAN ST. ARTS FAIR:
Enjoy a juried art and craft show, musical groups, open mic, street performers, makers’ spaces for kids and adults, and food trucks all in the Beekman Street Arts District from Grand Avenue to West Circular, which will be closed to traffic from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Sunday, June 10. BLUES FOR THE KARNER BLUES:
Early June is one of the most spectacular times to visit the Saratoga Sandplains as the endangered Karner blue butterflies from the first brood are flying around looking for mates. In celebration of this explosion of color, a free concert featuring The Resonators will take place at the Camp Saratoga location on Scout Road in Wilton on Sunday, June 10 from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. This joint project with the Saratoga Acoustic Blues Society will take place rain or shine, either outdoors at the Pavilion on the Parade Ground or in the Dining Hall of Camp Saratoga if there is inclement weather. CAPITAL DISTRICT HUMANIST SOCIETY:
Olga Z. Porterfield, who is a member of CDHS, was born and raised in Moscow, Russia. In 1979 at the age of 20, Olga left her home hoping to build a better life. She came to the US as a refugee alone because her parents were refused exit visas. Porterfield, will give a brief overview of the struggle for emigration of Soviet Jews as well as her personal emigration story at 1:15 p.m., following refreshments at 12:30 p.m., at Room 224, Campus Center, Sage Colleges Albany Campus, New Scotland Avenue and Albany Road, Albany. On Sunday, June 10, join awardwinning art critic Jed Perl, author of “Calder: The Conquest of Time” (the first full-length biography of Alexander Calder ever written), for a conversation with Stanley Cohen, president of the Scone Foundation, as they share personal stories of friendship with a true American genius. On Sunday June 10, from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m., Forno Bistro, a DZ Restaurant, will be hosting its Annual Wine, Spirit & Food Tasting event, “Corks & Cuisine.” There will be over 40 unique wine, spirits and beers to taste along with food from all three DZ restaurants. DEANNA RIVERS SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT:
Mohawk Honda is asking the community to attend and support the 6th Annual Deanna Rivers 518 Memorial Softball Tournament on Sunday, June 10. Rivers was killed by a drunk driver along with fellow Shenendehowa student Christopher Stewart in December of 2012. A softball clinic for youth also will be held. 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., Memorial Field, Clifton Common, 7 Clifton Common Blvd., Clifton Park. $3 requested donation.
GRANT COTTAGE:
The story of Malta, NY native Elmer Ellsworth, the first Union casualty of the Civil War, will be told by Paul Perreault, Town of Malta Historian and former member of the Friends of Grant Cottage Board of Trustees. 1 p.m., Grant Cottage Historic Site, 1000 Mt. McGregor Road, Wilton. The suggested donation for programs is $5 per person.
MARIPOSA FOUNDATION:
On Sunday, June 10, the community is invited to Old Saratoga Reformed Church in Schuylerville, to meet Sherry Herdman, who volunteers with the Mariposa Foundation in the Dominican Republic. The not-for-profit Mariposa Foundation is dedicated to helping to educate, empower and employ women and girls in the Dominican Republic and neighboring Haiti. Sherry will speak during the worship service (from 10 a.m. - 11 a.m.) A pot luck luncheon will follow in the church hall from 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., with an opportunity to talk with Sherry. MOREAU-SGF FLAG DAY:
The Moreau and South Glens Falls Historical Society will hold its annual Flag Day Celebration at 1 p.m. Sunday at Parks-Bentley Place, 53 Ferry Blvd. in South Glens Falls. Members of the South Glens Falls American Legion will present the flag and Gary Ferris, local veteran and entertainer, will present his “Until It’s Over Over There” 1940s radio show. The Jane McCrea Chapter of the D.A.R. will serve strawberry sundaes. Visitors are asked to bring lawn chairs or blankets to enjoy the patriotic celebration. SARATOGA JEWISH CULTURAL FESTIVAL:
The Saratoga Jewish Cultural Festival, a six congregation collaboration of Skidmore Office for Jewish Student Life, Chabad of Saratoga Springs, Chabad of Clifton Park, Congregation Beth Shalom, Congregation Shaara Tfille, and Temple Sinai, returns to the Saratoga region for its seventh season. On June 10, Arnie Adler, the son of Hungarian Jews, shares his late parents’ powerful story of survival and redemption during the Holocaust.
