VOLKSWALK LAKE PLACID:
A volkswalk is a recreationallypaced, pre-mapped walk in a culturally or historically interesting area. They are planned with safety in mind, and are great opportunities for exercise and sociability. On July 1, a guided walk through Lake Placid starts at 1:30 p.m., starting from the Lake Placid Visitors Center, 2608 Main Street. DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE: Senior Colonie Town Justice and Court Administrator Peter G. JULY 4 PARADE: The 11 a.m. July 4 parade from the Berlin Elementary School, 53 School Street is the only July 4 parade in Rensselaer County. This year’s theme is “American Inventors.” Look for parade route signs along Park Ave., Community Ave., Elm St and NYS Rt. 22. Off street parking is encouraged. Look for parking signs along Main Street, at the Berlin Fire House and other areas along the parade route. Immediately following the parade, Hill Hollow Band will perform in the Berlin Firehouse Parking lot. SCHUYLER MANSION: On Wednesday, July 4, Schuyler Mansion State Historic Site, located at 32 Catherine Steet in Albany, invites the public to attend an old-fashioned Independence Day celebration on the mansion grounds from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be a variety of 18th century inspired activities that may be sampled throughout the afternoon and demonstrations of candle-dipping, tin-smithing and natural dying. Performers include the Hudson River Ramblers, the Gratto Variety Show and Rural Felicity. This event is free and open to the public. USS SLATER: A National Historic Landmark, the only restored World War II destroyer escort afloat in America will be open to the public for guided tours from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Independence Day, Wednesday, July 4. BARKER PARK: Barker Park’s Summer Series celebrates local superheroes. The series kicks off on July 5 with a visit from the Troy Police and Fire departments. The Fire Department will bring one of the big rigs and children will have a chance to get up close! Joining them will be members of the Troy Police Department. Children will get to look at a police car and bike, and they might get a visit from the K9 officer. 11 a.m. at the corner of State and Third streets in downtown Troy.
