Activities set for Moreau Lake State Park

MOREAU, N.Y. » The following events are planned at Moreau Lake State Park this month.

July 11: Baker Trail and Ridge Run Hike (10 a.m.-1:30 p.m.) Summit the Palmertown range at a comfortabl­e pace, then hike the ridge which is rather flat and goes past the overlook of Moreau Lake. This hike will be about 4.5-5 miles.

July 12: Kid’s Craft (1 p.m.) Arts and crafts.

July 12: Fish Fillet Demo (2 p.m.) Take a lesson from the Park Naturalist, who has mastered the skill. No reservatio­n necessary. This event is free.

July 13: Hudson River Kayak (10 a.m.-1:30 p.m.) Park Naturalist will lead this paddle along the river pointing out signs of wildlife while teaching strokes and kayaking safety.

July 16: Kids Birding (9 a.m.) See and learn about birds. Bring binoculars. Fee is $1 per child.

July 17: Moreau After Dark (8-9:30 p.m.) This program is intended for families of all ages. Take a short hike around Moreau Lake in the dark, looking and listening for nocturnal animals. Flashlight­s and/or headlamps are recommende­d and be sure to bring bug spray. Stop at the office first to pay for the event. Children and seniors are $1; adults are $2.

July 18: Mud Pond Hike (10 a.m.-noon) This is a pretty flat hike, about 2.5 miles round trip. Fees apply.

July 19: Knee High Naturalist (10 a.m. and 1 p.m.) This class is intended for children ages 1-6 and their parents/guardians along with any siblings. There will be a short story or two based on the outdoors followed by a short hike to see wildlife. Fee is $1 per child.

July 24: Critter Crawl (10 a.m.) Walk to a close by creek and look under logs and rocks searching for critters. Meet and pay for the event at the park office.

July 25: Fishing with Gary (9 a.m.-noon) Only 2 seats are available in the boat for these special adventures. Call to reserve one at (518) 793-0511.

July 26: Hudson River Kayak (10 a.m.-1:30 p.m.) Park Naturalist will lead this paddle along the river pointing out signs of wildlife while teaching strokes and kayaking safety.

July 26: Kid’s Craft (1 p.m.) Arts and crafts.

July 27: Fishing with Gary

(9 a.m.-noon) Only 2 seats are available in the boat for these special adventures. Call to reserve one at (518) 793-0511.

July 28: Fish Fillet Demo (2 p.m.) Take a lesson from the Park Naturalist, who has mastered the skill. No reservatio­n necessary. This event is free.

July 28: Full Moon Hike (8-9:30 p.m.) Park Naturalist will be leading this month’s Full Moon Hike. While walking around the lake, he will point out flora and fauna as the sun is setting and the moon is rising. Program fees apply.

July 31: Beaver Adventure (10 a.m.) This short walk is family friendly and will bring participan­ts close to a beaver lodge and on the edge of some great beaver habitat. A Park Educator will teach about beavers.

Programs are held weather permitting and are subject to change. Call the park office to confirm event date, time and location. Participan­ts should be prepared to spend time outside and are encouraged to wear appropriat­e clothing and footwear.

Reservatio­ns are required for most activities and there are program fees with all classes. If there are no participan­ts signed up, classes can be cancelled at the discretion of the park.
