SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. » The Spa City now has a new Jewish deli with the opening of Saratoga’s Broadway Deli.

The eatery opened this week in the Washington building at 420 Broadway, Suite 2, in downtown Saratoga Springs.

A grand opening celebration and ribbon cutting with the Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce was held Tuesday at the deli, which is owned and operated by local chef Daniel Chessare.

A longtime member of the Saratoga Springs culinary scene, after working in other downtown restaurants like Professor Moriarty’s, The Wine Bar, Scallions, The Bread Basket Bakery and The Merry Monk, Chessare decided to go out on his own, starting his first entrepreneurial endeavor with Saratoga’s Broadway Deli.

A sign in the window calls Saratoga’s Broadway Deli “The Best Jewish Deli North of NYC,” and its menu includes staples like matzo ball soup, chopped liver and tongue sandwiches, corned beef, pastrami, potato pancakes and knishes.

“Pretty much anything you’d find in a New York City deli,” said Chessare, who now lives in Corinth but his family is from New Jersey. “All of the good delis and diners are down there.”

On why he decided to start the new business, Chessare said. “I just figured Saratoga really needed a Jewish deli. I don’t know how we didn’t have one.”

Personally, “I was really just looking to do something different,” Chessare continued. “I didn’t want to just go work for another restaurant in town.”

So, “I figured since Saratoga needed a deli and I wanted to do something - it worked well together,” the owner said.

Now open, Chessare and his team aim to satisfy Saratoga’s cravings for New York deli fare.

While embarking on a new adventure in his career, Chessare said his goal for the future of Saratoga’s Broadway Deli is simply to be successful. “We

would like to expand to offer more things in the coming months - maybe bagels, maybe bialys, maybe try and get a brisket on the menu,” he said, “but we’re just starting small and then we’ll get bigger as we go along.”

Saratoga’s Broadway Deli is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday.

Most menu items at Saratoga’s Broadway Deli range from $5 to $14 each.

Fresh baked goods like black and white cookies are also available daily.

For customers coming in for the first time, Chessare recommends trying a sandwich. “They can’t go wrong with pastrami or corned beef,” he said.

Guests can enjoy their meals in the deli’s dining area, or take their food to go. Delivery is available as well.
