CATHERINE SCHOEN WALLACE
Catherine S. Wallace, 93, of Saratoga Springs, NY; formerly of Annapolis, MD and Clifton Park, NY died July 13, 2018 at her daughter Margaret’s home where she was living. Catherine was born on January 7, 1925 in Brooklyn, NY to Ann MacKay and Joseph Schoen. She was predeceased by her parents; her sister, Jean Frey; and her son John Kirkpatrick Wallace. Catherine received a degree in journalism in 1946 from Keuka College in Penn Yan, NY. In 1962, while raising her six children, she was the first woman elected to the Board of Education of North Colonie, NY. She earned two masters Degrees from St. Rose College in English (1967) and Reading (1972). She then taught reading at Shenendehowa Middle School for 10 years. In 1980, she moved to Annapolis, MD where she helped construct the house she moved into. During her time in Annapolis, she was a devoted volunteer for Adult Literacy and GED programs as well as a friend of Bill W. In 2005, Catherine moved to Saratoga Springs, NY where she volunteered at the local hospital and frequented the library and Northshire Bookstore. Catherine was an artist and craftsperson, working in many unique media such as stone mosaics, furniture refinishing, sewing and quilting. She donated her beautiful quilts to local fund raising efforts and shared them with friends and family. Catherine is survived by her children: C Judith Wallace of RI (Al Masse), Margaret Wallace of Queensbury, David Wallace of Annapolis, Jeanne Mueller (Gene) of Montgomery, NY and Marian Wallace (V. Vale) of San Francisco, CA.; and her grandchildren: Laura Dankelman, John and Kevin Mueller, Valentine Wallace, Matthew and John Wallace. Catherine is remembered as a well-read conversationalist, and for her sense of humor and positive attitude towards life…and death. She died peacefully at home with her family and made an anatomical gift of her body to Albany Medical Center College.
