A Pink Sheet and a smile

“My family encourages a good work ethic, so it’s always been ‘You want to get a job early,’ plus my family feels that if you want to get money to do stuff, you’ve got to work to get the money,” Irish said.

There are also lessons to be learned during her mornings and early afternoons near the front of Saratoga Race Course.

“You have to learn how to face rejection, not every person coming around buys a Pink Sheet,” Irish said.

But that doesn’t dampen her mood.

“I’ve gotten a few people that complimented my smile,” Irish said. “There is one guy that usually works at the both in the beginning of the day that gives my $5 every day just or showing up because he thinks it’s a great job for kids my age.”

Katie also plans on beating her brother’s sales numbers…easily. “He knows I could beat him, the girls always sell more than the guys here,” Irish said. “He used to wear a birthday sash every day.

“The sash will probably come out; it’s a nice bright pink sash that says ‘Birthday Girl’ on it. He didn’t care he sold Pink Sheets with it on.”

She said her first day at the historic race course was challenging.

“I was nervous the first day but everybody here is nice and I’ve got good people here,” Irish said. “The people here are all nice.”

She has learned one thing, smiles sell Pink Sheets.

“Just smile at every customer you see,” Irish said. “Even if you don’t get them today, they might see you again the next day and think ‘You know what, she was nice. I can buy from her today.’”
