TROY, N.Y. » The Collar City beer scene is growing with a new bar, bottle shop and tasting room in its downtown district.

Clifton Park-based Shmaltz Brewing Company recently opened 518 Craft and The Shmaltz Shop at 200 Broadway, in the former Subway sandwich shop space on Monument Square.

In addition to showcasing the breadth of Shmaltz’s portfolio - including the latest seasonals, annual favorites, and vintage beers from its private archive - 518 Craft also aims to serve as a premier haven for select releases from New York State craft breweries and farm brewers as well as the state’s top producers of spirits, wines and ciders. An extensive list of craft products are available, for both on-site tastings in the tap room and to-go purchases from The Shmaltz Shop.

Jeremy Cowan, founder and owner of 518 Craft and Shmaltz Brewing Company, was joined by staff, local officials and members of the community on Thursday to celebrate the opening at a ribbon cutting ceremony.

Following this event, the new business celebrated further at its grand opening party on Friday, during Troy Night Out, featuring live music, an art installation, artisanal foods and beers from New York State Brewers Association.

“This is my home, and I’m really proud of what we were able to accomplish here,” said Cowan, who lives in Troy, at the event.

Cowan also announced plans for a series of presentations about Troy’s history, to include people’s personal stories.

“Welcome aboard, We’re delighted that you’re here,” Troy Mayor Patrick Madden said to Cowan during the ceremony. “We’re thrilled you’re here and we’re thrilled that you chose to invest in Troy. It’s a sign of confidence.”

New York State Senator Neil Breslin and Assemblyman John McDonald were also present at Thursday’s event to congratulate the new business on its opening in the area.

Likewise, neighbors from the Downtown Troy BID are glad to see the new business established. “Shmaltz is a welcomed addition to the downtown business community,” said Katie Hammon, executive director of the Downtown Troy BID, in a press release. “We are thrilled to watch them thrive with such passion and excitement for their community, and breathe life into a prominent corner here in downtown Troy.”

Over the past five years in the Capital Region, Shmaltz Brewing Company has cultivated strong alliances with the finest barley and hop farmers, local purveyors and craft breweries throughout the state.

As an homage to eastern Upstate New York, Shmaltz Brewing has proudly brewed an array of specialty beers under its hyper-local brands 518 and 838 using regionally grown grains in all of its releases.

Now Shmaltz has its own new home for the 518/838 brands and its award-winning portfolio of craft beers at 518 Craft.

Along with this latest accomplishment, in the past several years Shmaltz Brewing acquired and rebranded the Alphabet City Brewing beers and signed an exclusive licensing agreement with CBS for a series of Star Trek beers distributed through its sales network. In 2018, Shmaltz also signed a national sales and marketing partnership with Artisanal brands, which represents renowned brewers such as Bosteels (Triple Karmeliet), La Trappe, and American craft brewers Fulton (MN) and Whiner (IL).
