ValleyCats manager holds meeting before Monday night win

By Joe Boyle TROY » After the Tri-City ValleyCats lost to the Connecticu­t Tigers last Thursday 2-1, the ‘Cats traveled to Lowell for a three game series against the Spinners.

At the time, the ValleyCats held a three and a half game lead over the Spinners and had the opportunit­y to extend the gap between them and the second place Spinners in the standings.

Well wouldn’t you know it, the Spinners swept the ValleyCats and the ‘Cats’ lead had fallen to just half a game coming into Monday nights’ series start with the Brooklyn Cyclones.

“It’s tough when you have your longest stretch of losses in your short time of the year against the team right behind you in the standings,” said ValleyCats Manager Jason Bell. ““It’s a tough series. I think we played better than maybe the scores looked and maybe didn’t get the bounces we wanted. Many of the so-called kids on the team were in grade school when Manning was taken with the first pick of the 2004 draft.

Some such as halfback and recent No. 2 overall pick Saquon Barkley were still in grade school when the quarterbac­k won his first of two Super Bowl MVPs in February 2008.

And things certainly are different now. The music has morphed. The games played on the cell phones and tablets are more advanced. Phrases used in speech have changed. Dancing on the field and in the locker room is more prevalent.

“There’s a lot of dancing going on, a lot of dancing, which, I find very curious,” Manning, 37, said Tuesday after the Giants practiced for their annual preseason game against the Jets. “The music, I miss out on some of the music and social media, some of the things they’re on. For the most part, I can figure it out.”
