Calendar features fire towers
LAKE GEORGE, N.Y. » The 2019 edition of Adirondack Mountain Club calendar features scenes from Adirondack and Catskills fire tower peaks.
Once used as fire safety and observation lookouts, the famed historic fire towers add an element of discovery to hikes, a news release said.
The Mountain Club has promoted fire towers since the early 1990s, when a series of tower restorations prompted publication of the club’s popular hiking guide “Views From On High: Fire Tower Trails in the Adirondacks and Catskills.”
Its second edition was released last November.
Many calendar scenes are familiar to people doing the Fire Tower Challenge, which requires hikers to ascend and document at least 23 of 30 fire tower summits in the Adirondacks and Catskills.
Scenes include views of and from Lyon Mountain, Hunter Mountain, Blue Mountain, Overlook Mountain, Hadley Mountain, Spruce Mountain, Black Mountain, Hurricane Mountain, Moxham Mountain, St. Regis Mountain, Belfry Mountain, and Poke-O Moonshine Mountain, and showcase striking scenery such as vivid sunsets, swaths of foliage, lake mist, rock faces, and thick coatings of snow.
The calendar was produced by ADK Publications staff Ann Hough of Keene, and Andrea Masters of Ballston Spa.
Purchase of this and other publications helps support the club’s programs in conservation, advocacy, education, stewardship, and recreation. Also available are hiking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and canoeing guides; natural history guides; and cultural and literary histories of the Adirondack and Catskill Parks.
