1777 history program planned
Event set for Sept. 22
SCHUYLERVILLE, N.Y. » Award-winning historian David Preston will present, “Colonial Saratoga: War and Peace on the Borderlands of Early America,” from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22 at Saratoga Town Hall in Schuylerville.
The Battles of Saratoga were fought in September and October 1777.
However, a more advanced study of colonial borderland and conflicts at Saratoga from 1650-1777 broadens understanding of the context of the 1777 campaign, battles, siege and surrender at Saratoga, and develops historical background information on the dominance and significance of the Schuyler family. New scholarship demonstrates that Saratoga has national significance as a geographic/cultural area that fits the model of frontier - borderland - bordered land. A direct result of this new research will be for enhanced interpretation of the Schuyler Estate and family, and also increased understanding of the Revolutionary War events the park interprets. Academic and community partnerships will be fostered and strengthened.
David Preston is an award-winning historian of American military history with a special interest in how war and peace among the French, British, and Indian peoples of 18th century America shaped the modern world.
He earned his doctorate in American history at The College of William & Mary, and is currently professor of history at The Citadel, where he teaches cadets and officer candidates about U.S. military history and early American history.
This event is free and open to the public.
