CAF suspends Egyptian club chairman for insult

-

CAIRO >> The chairman of one of Egypt’s top soccer clubs was suspended for one year and fined $40,000 on Saturday for insulting the head of the Confederation of African Football.

Cairo-based CAF announced the punishment for Murtada Mansour, chairman of Zamalek FC and a lawmaker, on Saturday. He has three days to appeal.

Mansour, whose frequent public outbursts earned him a maverick reputation, insulted CAF chairman Ahmad Ahmad, saying his 2017 election was corrupt.

Mansour also sharply criticized CAF for what he said was its failure to condemn abusive chants by fans of Cairo rival AlAhly against Turki Alsheikh, Saudi Arabia’s top sports official and head of the Arab soccer confederation.

Alsheikh has been at sharp odds with Al-Ahly chairman Mahmoud el-Khateib.
