SUNNY SUNDAYS: Sunny Sundays are your opportunity to take a safe glimpse at the sun. Educators from the Dudley Observatory at miSci will operate their 14inch telescope inside the roll-top roof observatory, allowing visitors to safely look at the sun and search for sunspots. Other objects such as the moon and planets may also be visible. In the event of poor weather, there will be handson indoor activities instead. SURRENDER DAY: Surrender Day 2018 takes place at Fort Hardy Park, Ferry Street, Schuylerville, on Wednesday, October 17, beginning at 10 a.m. This annual event commemorates the surrender of British Gen. John Burgoyne to American Gen. Horatio Gates, ending the 1777 Battles of Saratoga. The l historical celebration features re-enactors, period music and cannon salutes by the 2nd. Continental Artillery. The keynote speaker will be well-known impersonator Paul Stillman portraying Benjamin Franklin, speaking on his mission to France following the American victory. Members of the Schuylerville Central School fifth grade will read their essays about the Battles. Several notable State and Local dignitaries will also be in attendance. This outdoor celebration will not take place in the event of severe weather.
VOLKSWALK: A volkswalk is a recreationally-paced, pre-mapped walk in a culturally or historically interesting area. They are planned with safety in mind, and are great opportunities for exercise and sociability. On October 17 a guided walk through Saratoga National Historic Park starts from the Visitors Center, 648 Route 32, Stillwater, at 10 a.m. Registration for each event starts ½ hour prior to the walk and the cost is $2. The cultural presentation at this month’s business meeting is “Before They Were Our Mothers: Voices of Women Born Before Rosie Started Riveting.” Writers and editor Patricia A.
