SURRENDER DAY: Surrender Day 2018 takes place at Fort Hardy Park, Ferry Street, Schuylervi­lle, on Wednesday, October 17, beginning at 10 a.m. This annual event commemorat­es the surrender of British Gen. John Burgoyne to American Gen. Horatio Gates, ending the 1777 Battles of Saratoga. The l historical celebratio­n features re-enactors, period music and cannon salutes by the 2nd. Continenta­l Artillery. The keynote speaker will be well-known impersonat­or Paul Stillman portraying Benjamin Franklin, speaking on his mission to France following the American victory. Members of the Schuylervi­lle Central School fifth grade will read their essays about the Battles. Several notable State and Local dignitarie­s will also be in attendance. This outdoor celebratio­n will not take place in the event of severe weather.

VOLKSWALK: A volkswalk is a recreation­ally-paced, pre-mapped walk in a culturally or historical­ly interestin­g area. They are planned with safety in mind, and are great opportunit­ies for exercise and sociabilit­y. On October 17 a guided walk through Saratoga National Historic Park starts from the Visitors Center, 648 Route 32, Stillwater, at 10 a.m. Registrati­on for each event starts ½ hour prior to the walk and the cost is $2.
