Saratoga Springs - Rachel Elizabeth (Rogers) Buchanan, 88, passed away peacefully on November 16, 2018 with her husband, Gordon A. Buchanan, at her side. Rachel was born on April 15, 1930 in Mt. Vernon, NY to the late Charles W. and Martha A. (Bartlett) Rogers. Rachel was raised in Maine, the home state of her parents, and graduated from Old Town High School in 1948. She attended the Maine General Hospital School of Nursing in Portland and worked for a time as a nurse prior to marriage. She served in the US Naval Reserve. Rachel and Gordon grew up in Old Town, Maine and went to the same high school. They became friends and eventually sweethearts and married on December 26, 1951 while Gordon was on leave from the U.S.S. New Jersey during the Korean War. After their three children were born, Rachel was a full-time mom; she was an accomplished seamstress and involved in scouting and school activities. Once the children were in high school, she worked for several years as a bank teller. Rachel was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Rachel enjoyed many summers at the family cottage on Cold Stream Pond in Enfield, Maine. She loved the outdoors, planting pansies each spring in her flower gardens, and helping tend to whatever odd assortment of wild animals her son Stuart brought home. She enjoyed hiking and fishing on family outings and annual camping trips in northern Maine. She and Gordon enjoyed trips to Puerto Rico and Europe, and cruises to Alaska and the Panama Canal. Rachel was always willing to try something new and at age 58 went parasailing in Mexico; riding in a hot air balloon was next on her bucket list. Rachel was a wonderful mother and a loving wife; she had a great sense of humor and a boisterous laugh that will be sorely missed. In addition to her husband Gordon, Rachel is survived by her son Stuart (Mary) Buchanan, and daughters Rhonda (Thomas) Pray, and Daphne (the late Robert C., Sr.) Forezzi. She is also survived by grandchildren Nathaniel, Theodore, and Alexandra Buchanan; Jessica (Nathaniel) Whittemore, John Pray, and Nicholas Forezzi. She is also survived by the newest member of the family, her beloved great grandchild, Alden Shepherd Whittemore. Rachel was the youngest of five sibling; Carolyn R. White, Charles W. Rogers, Jr., Dean B. Rogers, and Eugene W. Rogers. Rachel’s family would like to thank the staff of the Home of the Good Shepherd in Moreau, as well as the nurses of the Community Hospice who cared for Rachel and continue their support for the family. A memorial service for friends and family will be held on Friday, November 23, 2018 at 11:30am at the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff, Inc. Funeral Home, 628 North Broadway, Saratoga Springs with Chaplain Richard Hoffman officiating.
