Unbeaten Blue Streaks unranked in Week 1 poll

By Stan Hudy SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. >> The Saratoga Springs boys basketball team could be singing the holiday classic ‘Baby, it’s cold outside’ as the Blue Streaks were not one of the top 25 Class AA teams ranked Tuesday by the New York State Sportswriters Association.

The unbeaten Blue Streaks (4-0), with two league wins and two wins against Section III (Syracuse-area) Henninger and Nottingham didn’t appear to be enough to catapult Saratoga out of the honorable mention listings.

Meanwhile, 2-0 Shenendehowa, the defending Section 2 champions were ranked No. 16, ahead of Christian Brothers Academy at No. 20 as the Plainsmen beat the Brothers Dec. 7 at the buzzer.

Also included in the Class AA honorable mentions was Bethlehem (40), who will face Shenendehowa tonight, Dec. 11 at home.

In Class A undefeated Albany Academy (2-0) entered the first overall boys basketball rankings at No. 2 with Mekeel Christian (30) at No. 13.

Averill Park (2-0), Gloversville (4-1), Mohonasen (2-1) and Queensbury (3-0) were honorable mentions.

Schalmont (5-0) was the top Section 2 school ranked among the 25 teams in Class B at No. 4 overall. Glens Falls (3-0) arrived at No. 6 with Catskill (6-0) coming in at No. 13 and Watervliet (3-0) entering at No. 22.

Broadalbin-Perth (12), Cobleskill Richmondville (2-1), Mechanicville (2-0) and Schuylerville (21) were listed as honorable mentions.

Lake George (4-0) enters the 2018-2019 rankings at No. 1 of the 20 Class C schools listed Tuesday. Hoosick Falls (1-0) arrives at No. 8 followed by Greenwich (4-0) at No. 10 along with Maple Hill (31) at No. 15.

Berne-Knox-Westerlo (40), Mayfield (2-2) and Saratoga Central Catholic (2-1) were all honorable mentions.

Fort Ann (6-0) was the top Section 2 team in the 15-squad Class D rankings released Tuesday at No. 6. Argyle (3-1) followed at No. 11 and OppenheimEpratah-St. Johnsville (3-1) closed out the list at No. 15.
