Campaign reaches out for more donations

Annual campaign is seeing less donations this year

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. >> With many people not carrying cash anymore, the Salvation Army is reaching out to Saratogians to consider digging deep into their pockets to help the charity reach its goal this holiday season.

“The bitterly cold weather has contributed to fewer donations and fewer volunteers. However, we have faith that this will turn around!” said Lieutenant Smouse in a news release.

The nonprofit said kettle donations are down 20 percent and they are asking for contributions to assist them in reaching their $125,000 fundraising goal.

With the end of the annual fundraising effort approaching shortly, the local The Salvation Army reports that although more than $75,000 has been raised overall since the start of the campaign on Nov. 16, a final push will be required to raise the funds necessary to meet the needs of the people they serve. Last year, The Salvation Army surpassed its $125,000 goal by $3,000, officials said.

“With 6.43 percent of Saratoga County residents living be-

low the poverty line, and thousands more living right at the poverty line, we simply can’t afford to miss making our goal this year,” said Lieutenant Barker in the release. “We are counting on the generosity of Saratogians to help us keep doing the most good this Christmas season and throughout the entire year. The Fresh Start program, which provides breakfast, showers, clothing and laundry services to the homeless population year-round is a crucial program that serves the homeless as they work to regain stability in their lives.

Red Kettle donations account for more than onethird of all contributions to the organization. Without the bells, the organization wouldn’t be able to keep providing important services such as programs for youth, families, seniors, and a growing homeless population within the county throughout the year.

Individuals can still give online or by slipping a check in the iconic red kettles when they encounter one as they run their own errands.
