QUEENSBURY, N.Y. >> Local musician Lucas Garrett has big plans for 2019 with the release of his first full-length album Love Is Better.

The first single from that album, called “Aphrodite,” is dropping this Friday, when fans will get their first taste of Garrett’s new music.

The whole 14-song Love Is Better album is to be released in April, following two more singles “Where Are You Going?” and title track “Love Is Better” scheduled for February and March.

Garrett, of Queensbury, has been hard at work on Love Is Better for about nine months, and is excited to finally share some of his tunes from the album.

“We are almost done recording everything,” Garrett said, noting that the song and album were recorded at Nashphone Recording Co. (Jesse Bolduc of Candy Ambulance), and the they’re being mastered by Starling Studios (Jason Brown).

“My new music is a big departure from my first EP’s style,” Garrett said, referring to his debut release Evening’s Come, But It’s Not Dark from 2017.

“The first album was mainly an acoustic album. There wasn’t a lot of electrical instrumentation,” he explained. “The second album is really largely more of an ensemble effort, where there’s a little bit of everything in most of the songs.”

Garrett really pulled out all of the stops in making this record. There’s a string section on one track, a lot of keyboards throughout and a selection of guest artists featured. “It’s been a pretty big effort,” he said, reflecting on all the time put in since last April when he started the project.

Releasing his first full-length album, which he wrote in its entirety, is a big milestone for Garrett.

Coming from a musical family, he began playing music when he was 12 years old at home on a ukulele. Shortly after, “I found out I needed more strings, so I went to acoustic guitar,” he said.

Garrett started playing out in public during his college days. Some of his first performances were at Gaffney’s Open Mic Night in downtown Saratoga Springs, before he started branching out with gigs in different areas.

A Love Is Better album release show is being planned for April, with details to be announced. “It’s going to be an awesome show,” said Garrett, who anticipates several months of playing around the region after the release event.

Garrett is confident that listeners will like the new sound he’s debuting with Love Is Better. “The concept of this album is admittedly a lot more dark than the first one,” Garrett said. “I think it’s a lot more visceral, and a lot more relatable.”
