Saturday, July 20 HERITAGE HUNTERS MEETING: Heritage Hunters of Saratoga County will meet on Saturday, July 20th, at 1 pm at the Town of Saratoga Town Hall, corner of Rt. 4 and Rt. 29 in Schuylerville. Filmmaker, Barbara Reina, will tell the story of hundreds of slave burials from the early 1800s that were discovered in a weed infested cemetery. “Brought to Light: Unearthing the History of an African-American Cemetery in Kinderhook, N.Y.” We will view the documentary which includes coverage of an archeological dig, a ground penetrating radar survey, a re-dedication ceremony and an oral history dramatization about the Underground Railroad that existed in the area. VETERANS HALL OPEN HOUSE: Saturday, July 20, 2019 10:00-2:00 - Veterans Hall Honors All Veterans Past and Present. This building is located on the Schaghticoke Fairgrounds and is comprised of a group of volunteers who feel passionate about thanking our veterans. Many have visited Veterans Hall during the fair or have come to an Open House to pay tribute to our veterans and say thank you. Everyone knows and loves a veteran and many come to share that connection. Some come to see a picture, a clipping or perhaps an item donated by family or a friend of a veteran that served our country. In addition we are compiling a list of veteran’s names from Rensselaer, Saratoga, Albany, Washington, and surrounding counties. We can use your help in this endeavor. This will be an ongoing objective for years to come. Getting your veteran’s name on the list is free, easy and a good way to ensure his/her service will be remembered. REPAIR CAFE: At Schuylerville Public Library (52 Ferry Street) on Saturday July 20 everything centers on making repairs. Starting from 11am and ending at 2pm, various volunteer repair experts will be available to help make all possible repairs free of charge. Most tools and materials will also be on hand. People visiting the Repair Café will bring along their broken items from home. Toasters, lamps, hair dryers, computers, radios, clothes, bikes, toys... anything that is broken and small enough to carry is welcome (please do not bring anything leaking oil or creating a mess or odor) and can more than likely be repaired. DAY: Sunday, July 21, 1:00 PM-2:00 PM. One hundred and thirty-four years ago, at the age of 63, U.S. Grant finally bowed to the enemy who could defeat him – cancer. It has become a tradition at Grant Cottage to mark this somber occasion by recreating the Grant family circle and allowing those who loved him most to speak about Grant the husband, father and grandfather. Re-enactors portraying Grant’s family and close friends will gather on the Cottage porch and bid the man they loved and respected a final, very personal farewell. Speakers will be Ben Kemp (in the character of the Grants’ oldest son, Frederick Dent Grant), Jessica Jenks (portraying the Grants’ only daughter, Ellen Wrenshall Grant Sartoris, called Nellie by the family), Chris Kelly (portraying Adj. General Richard Drum) and Kevin O’Brien (portraying Mark Twain). The program will include music, and while acknowledging grief, will be a celebration of Grant’s truly extraordinary life. The suggested donation for Grant Cottage Porch Programs is $5 per person.

BLOOD DRIVE: Saratoga Casino Hotel is teaming up with the American Red Cross to host a Blood Drive on Monday, July 22. Members of the local community are urged to join dozens of Saratoga Casino Hotel team members to give blood on Monday, July 22 from noon to 6pm inside the hotel ballroom. All presenting donors at this year’s Blood Drive will receive a $10 voucher to Perks Café, located in the hotel lobby. The Red Cross will also be providing donors with a free t-shirt. KATE MULLANEY HOUSE VISIT: July 24, 5:00pm, Kate Mullany National Historic Site, 350 8th St, Troy. Members will tour the newly renovated home of the famous immigrant labor leader in our own Collar City. This modest three-story brick house is the only surviving building associated with Kate Mullany, a young Irish immigrant laundry worker who in 1864 organized and led the all-female “Collar Laundry Union” labor union. By the 1860s, Troy supplied most of America’s detachable collars and cuffs, employing over 3,700 women launderers, starchers, and ironers. Working 14 hour days for $2 a week, the women launderers labored in oppressive heat. When owners introduced new machinery that increased production, but worsened working conditions, a young woman named Kate Mullany organized a union to demand change. In February of 1864, Mullany and 200 other workers formed the Collar Laundry Union. The well organized union struck and demanded a 25 cent raise, and the laundry owners capitulated a week after the strike began. Mullany herself gained national recognition in 1868, when National Labor Union President William Sylvis made her the first female appointed to a labor union’s national office. One of the American labor movement’s earliest women leaders, the home of Kate Mullany exemplifies a strong tradition of women’s union activity. Price: Donation. Thursday, Aug. 1 BARBERSHOP ON BROADWAY: The Racing City Chorus returns to Broadway, Saratoga Springs for six consecutive Thursday evenings from July 25-August 29 during Racing Season to entertain summer crowds with their A Cappella “Barbershop-style” singing. Performances will begin at 7pm and continue at a variety of downtown venues until 9pm.
