Police seek help in assault ID

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. >> The Saratoga Springs Police Department is asking for the public’s assistance toward identifyin­g an unknown male suspect who attacked a woman in the area of Phila Street and Nelson Avenue late Saturday evening.

On Sunday, the Saratoga Springs Police Department took a call for an assault that occurred late the previous day. The caller/ victim was a 35-year-old woman who is a city resident.

The caller informed the initial responding officer that about 11 p.m. on Saturday night, she had left the Caroline/Putnam Street area on foot, traveling south on Putnam Street and then eastbound on Phila Street.

The victim said she was in the area of Phila Street and Nelson Avenue when she heard a bicyclist approachin­g from behind, and she stopped. The bicyclist, who was a male, stopped next to her and got off the bike.

The unknown male then proceeded to grab the victim around the head and neck. The victim was able to break the male’s hold and yell for assistance. The unknown male then released the victim and quickly left on the bicycle in an unknown direction.

The caller received some minor injury, but did not require medical attention.

The male is described as 20 to 30 years of age, having a darker skin tone, about 5-foot-6, and of slight build. He was wearing a red tee shirt with white lettering or a white logo across the chest, lighter blue jeans, and a fitted baseball hat that was blue on the front half and white on the back.

Despite early efforts, this male has yet to be identified.He had been observed on surveillan­ce in the Putnam Street area in the time frame prior to the assault.

At this time this assault appears to be a random act.

Police is seeking the public’s assistance to identify this unknown male. If you should have surveillan­ce video from about 11 p.m. Saturday night, along the previously described route, you are asked to contact the Saratoga Springs Police Department at (518) 584-1800.

Surveillan­ce photos will be shared with the public as soon as possible.
