ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
GlobalFoundries celebrates 10th anniversary in Saratoga County
MALTA, N.Y. >> GlobalFoundries marked a milestone this week as the semiconductor foundry celebrated its 10th anniversary in Saratoga County.
The company’s local staff and leadership invited area dignitaries and supporters to its Fab 8 site on Wednesday for a special ceremony commemorating a decade since the groundbreaking of the major project in Malta’s Luther Forest.
“On this day 10 years ago, we broke ground here at the site, and that day launched our bold plan, one that today has become a model for U.S. manufacturing, right here in upstate New York,” GlobalFoundries Senior Vice President and General Manager of U.S. Operations Ron Sampson said to the large crowd at the start of Wednesday’s event.
GlobalFoundries CEO Tom Caulfield, who joined the company in May 2014, spoke during the ceremony as well.
“Much has changed in our business and the broader industry over the past decade, but one thing remains the same,” he said, “semiconductors are critical at the heart of everything that mankind and society does.”
Located on about 300 acres in the Luther Forest Technology Park in both the Towns of Malta and Stillwater, GlobalFoundries Fab 8 is currently considered among the largest semiconductor manufacturing facilities, performing some of the most advanced research, development, and manufacturing of semiconductors in the world.
The Fab 8 complex consists of approximately 2.9
million square feet of building space including 450,000 square feet of clean-room and clean space.
The GlobalFoundries investment in Saratoga County has met or exceeded every benchmark and threshold such as the creation of new jobs and capital expenditures required under the terms and conditions of the New York State grant approved by the state Legislature in 2006.
“New York certainly has been a team player in the development of this facility,” said Empire State Development Corporation Vice President of Strategic Development Mark Reynolds, expressing that the state plans to continue supporting the company in the future too.
The Fab 8 site represents approximately $15 billion in private and public investment in Saratoga County.
Saratoga County Board of Supervisors Chairman Kevin Tollisen congratulated the company on its 10th anniversary during the recent event and thanked leaders for the impact Fab 8 has made on the county.
“This has been quite a journey of success for GlobalFoundries,” he said, “and we’re so very proud to join you today to celebrate in all of these accomplishments.”
GlobalFoundries plays a big role in the community as a major regional employer. At the end of June 2019, the company employed 3,021 full-time employees at Fab 8, in addition to approximately 250 contingent employees.
Along with local natives, a total of 71 countries have employees on the GlobalFoundries team, and 51 of those countries are represented at the Fab 8 site.
About 90 percent of employees at Fab 8 were hired from inside the U.S. Approximately 65 percent are from New York and 66 percent of them live in Saratoga County. GlobalFoundries focuses on both local hiring and military veteran hiring.
The company’s gross payroll in 2018 added approximately $379 million to the Saratoga County and Capital Region economy. Each full-time GlobalFoundries employee earns on average $97,619 in annual salary.
Since 2011, GlobalFoundries has paid more than $102 million in county, town and school taxes.
Furthermore, the company has invested $5 million in the communities of Malta and Stillwater; creating two non-profit charitable foundations and investing $1.1 million to develop and construct three-season recreation fields located in the Luther Forest Technology Park. Fab 8 ambassadors also donate thousands of volunteer hours each year.
After the ceremony at Fab 8 on Wednesday, employees gathered to form the shape of the number 10 in the parking lot for a staff photo, which was taken by a drone.
Following the photograph, all were invited for an ice cream celebration.
