Sunday, Aug. 4 COAST GUARD BIRTHDAY: The United States Coast Guard, one of the country’s five armed services, is a unique agency of the federal government. The service was founded on August 4, 1790 when the first Congress authorized the construction of ten vessels to enforce tariff and trade laws and prevent smuggling. Known variously as the Revenue Marine and the Revenue Cutter Service, the Coast Guard expanded in size and responsibilities as the nation grew. Friends of the USS SLATER will commemorate the 229th Birthday of the United States Coast Guard on Sunday, August 4 at 9:00 a.m. with a ceremony aboard the ship in Albany. “Coasties” and their friends and families are invited to attend. It is appropriate to celebrate the Coast Guard’s Birthday aboard USS SLATER as during World War II the Coast Guard manned hundreds of Navy and Army vessels including 30 Destroyer Escorts. Coast Guard-manned ships hunted enemy submarines, protected convoys to Europe, delivered troops and supplies to the various theaters of the war, and operated landing craft which delivered troops to the invasion beaches. Coast Guard cutters and destroyer escorts played a pivotal role fighting Nazi U-Boats in the Battle of the Atlantic. Following the war, during the 1950s, destroyer escorts were once again called into Coast Guard service to serve as weather ships. The SLATER volunteer crew includes a strong Coast Guard contingent, dedicated to preserving a piece of American history. USS SLATER is open Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., through December 1st. Admission is $9 for adults and $7 for children. BAKER FAMILY REUNION: Celebrating its 155th year this August, the Baker Family Reunion is now seeking to discover more about the women who comprise its ancestry! The 155th Annual gathering of the descendants of James Baker will be held Saturday, August 10 at the Malta Community Park. This year’s Reunion will be from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Tracing their roots back to Colonial Long Island, the Baker Family’s first reunion met in 1865 in the Town of Stillwater in Saratoga County. At the reunion were the sixteen sons of Revolutionary War veteran James Baker by James’ first wife, Cornelia Westervelt, and second wife, Ruth Post. In the early decades of the Reunion, men always took the lead in maintaining the yearly Reunion. By the last century, that changed radically! Now women comprise the majority of the Reunion’s officers and committee members, led by Reunion President Judy Farnan Farago. That group organizes the yearly Baker Family Reunion, maintain the Baker Cemetery in Stillwater, and collect the history of the family. This year, Baker Family Historian Maria Carr is looking for more stories about the women of the Baker Family. Strong, active Baker women can certainly be traced back to the family’s Quaker roots, and beyond. Throughout the year, Maria publishes a monthly historical piece on Bakers throughout the centuries. Called the “Baker ‘Did You Know?’ Fact,” it can be found on The Baker Family Reunion

Facebook page. Maria wants to expand her fascinating vignettes of Baker history to ensure a more complete record for the centuries to come. Have a Baker story to share—especially about Baker women? Email her at bakerreunion@roadrunner.com. Those wondering if they might be Baker descendants are welcome to attend this year’s Reunion, where help can be found to research their genealogical links to the family. There will also be displays of documents and photographs from the 1850s onward and family members are encouraged to bring news of marriages, births and deaths, so that the family record will stay current. All attending are asked to bring a covered dish to share.. Hotdogs, hamburgers, drinks and tableware will be provided. The Malta Community Park has picnic tables under a pavilion, bathroom facilities, playground equipment, a basketball court, and walking trails. The site is fully accessible with ample parking. Malta Community Park is on Plains Road County Route 108 in Malta. Take Exit 12 off the Northway (Route 87), then east onto Route 67 and onto County Route 108 East, the park is on the left.
