15TH ANNUAL CARDBOARD BOAT RACES: Calling all sailors! Join the fun with Hudson Crossing Park’s 15th Annual Cardboard Boat Races! Held every year at Fort Hardy Park in Schuylerville, the Cardboard Boat Race is a fun and creative community day on the Hudson River. Join us on Saturday, August 10, 2019 (rain date Sunday, August 11, 2019) at Fort Hardy Park beach on Route 29 in Schuylerville from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is free for spectators. On-site registration and cardboard boat construction is open from 8 to 11 a.m., and the first race launches at 1pm. Rules, registration forms and hints to get started with boat building is available at www.hudsoncrossingpark.org. Design your boats with this year’s theme in mind: Cosmic Cardboard! Race participants will construct a “human-powered” boat made of corrugated cardboard or 100% recycled materials, that will hold at least one crew member and be “seaworthy” enough to race a short distance on the Hudson River. Racers may construct their boats ahead of time or on the morning of the event where materials will be available at the event site for a nominal fee. Enjoy the festivities with food, live music, and lots of cardboard construction! Environmental education activities, canal trivia and terrific photo opportunities will round out a fun-filled day for all. Individuals, families, groups, businesses and school teams are all encouraged to race.

WATER FUN DAY: St. Luke’s on the Hill (40 Mc Bride Rd, Mechanicville) will sponsor another Water Fun Day on Saturday, August 10th from 10 to 1 pm. BAKER FAMILY REUNION: Celebrating its 155th year this August, the Baker Family Reunion is now seeking to discover more about the women who comprise its ancestry! The 155th Annual gathering of the descendants of James Baker will be held Saturday, August 10 at the Malta Community Park. This year’s Reunion will be from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Tracing their roots back to Colonial Long Island, the Baker Family’s first reunion met in 1865 in the Town of Stillwater in Saratoga County. At the reunion were the sixteen sons of Revolutionary War veteran James Baker by James’ first wife, Cornelia Westervelt, and second wife, Ruth Post. In the early decades of the Reunion, men always took the lead in maintaining the yearly Reunion. By the last century, that changed radically! Now women comprise the majority of the Reunion’s officers and committee members, led by Reunion President Judy Farnan Farago. That group organizes the yearly Baker Family Reunion, maintain the Baker Cemetery in Stillwater, and collect the history of the family. This year, Baker Family Historian Maria Carr is looking for more stories about the women of the Baker Family. Strong, active Baker women can certainly be traced back to the family’s Quaker roots, and beyond. Throughout the year, Maria publishes a monthly historical piece on Bakers throughout the centuries. Called the “Baker ‘Did You Know?’ Fact,” it can be found on The Baker Family Reunion Facebook page. Maria wants to expand her fascinating vignettes of Baker history to ensure a more complete record for the centuries to come. Have a Baker story to share—especially about Baker women? 18th CENTURY DAY AT THE HISTORIC SCHUYLER HOUSE: On Sunday, August 11th from noon to 5 p.m., the 1777 Schuyler House, on Route 4 in Schuylerville, will be the setting for dozens of artisans demonstrating their crafts much as they were plied over 200 years ago when household items were handcrafted. Visitors are advised to dress for hot weather, bring water, and wear insect repellent and sunscreen. Visitors to the 40th annual 18th Century Day will be able to enjoy the Schuyler House, see 18th century Punch & Judy puppet shows, and see artisans exhibiting period crafts such as quilting, butter making, cross-stitching, herbalist, blacksmithing, rug hooking, knitting, basket making, teamster, spinning, sheep shearing, needle working, yarn dyeing, and 18th -century medicine. Children can try their hand at candle dipping and colonial toys and games. This traditional event is organized by the Old Saratoga Historical Association, a non-profit educational organization that provides furnishings for the Schuyler House and promotes interest in the history of Old Saratoga, Schuylerville, Victory and the Town of Saratoga. YOUTH FISHING TOURNAMENT: L.L.I.A.’s 24th annual children’s fishing tournament will take place on Sunday, August 11th at the Washington County Park Pavilion on beautiful Lake Lauderdale. The tournament is free and open to all young anglers age 15 and under and is strictly catch and release only. The tournament runs from 8:0010:30 a.m. and concludes with a free hot dog lunch for all participants. As always, there will be no fee charged to children entering the contest. Registration opens at 7:30 a.m. and all young anglers are required to stop at the pavilion prior to getting their fishing lines wet. There will be several different age groups and L.L.I.A. is working hard to ensure that all participants receive a small prize. HONOR A VETERAN: The Rensselaer County Honor a Deceased Veteran Program will honor Anthony A. Maier at this month’s ceremony, to be held on August 12, 2019 at 0830 in the Legislative Chambers, Third Floor of the County Office Bldg. located at 1600 Seventh Avenue, Troy. Anthony served as a Truck Driver in the United States Army during WWII and in the United States Navy during the Korean War helping to get troops and equipment where they were needed. For his honorable service he received The American Service Medal, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the WWII Victory Medal. After his service Anthony returned home, married and began a family and local business working as a Remodeling Contractor. BARBERSHOP ON BROADWAY: The Racing City Chorus returns to Broadway, Saratoga Springs for six consecutive Thursday evenings from July 25-August 29 during Racing Season to entertain summer crowds with their A Cappella “Barbershop-style” singing. Performances will begin at 7pm and continue at a variety of downtown venues until 9pm. After their weekly line-up of Broadway appearances, the group will visit the Olde Bryan Inn for an “AfterGlow Party” that will include food and drink specials and an informal continuation of their A Cappella entertainment.
