THE GREAT CIVIL WAR BEARD & HAIRDO CONTEST: In the Civil War era hair meant something. For men facial hair was associated with masculinity, dignity and power. A man who could grow some good whiskers was respected. Even Presidential candidate Lincoln was convinced by a little girl to grow a beard while on campaign. For women hair represented femininity, grace, style, sophistication and beauty. As part of our Homecoming of the 118th NY Adirondack Regiment Civil War Encampment on September 7-8th, 2019 the Hadley-Lake Luzerne Historical Society is sponsoring a challenge: Do your best to grow and trim your beard or style your hair in a Civil War era style.
