♣REMEMBRANC­E CEREMONY: The City of Saratoga Springs invites the community to a 9⁄11 Remembranc­e Ceremony at High Rock Park on Wednesday, September 11, 2019. The ceremony, hosted by Mayor Meg Kelly, will be held at the Tempered by Memory sculpture at 8:30 a.m. The observance begins with a welcome from Raymond F. O’Conor, Author and CEO of Saratoga National Bank. A color guard from the Saratoga Springs Police Department and Saratoga Springs Fire Department will follow. A moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. will symbolize when the first plane hit the North Tower of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. The National Anthem will be sung by Keri Alonzo, and other music will be provided by Rick and Sharon Bolton. The keynote speech will be delivered by Patrick Kauth, the son of local 9⁄11 hero Don J. Kauth (who passed at age 51 while employed by Keefe, Bruyette & Woods). Comprised of five pieces of twisted steel from the 2001 terrorist attacks, the Tempered by Memory sculpture was created by Noah Savitz in collaborat­ion with John Van Alstine.

LIFTING UP WOMEN’S VOICES FROM THE PAST: Thursday, September 12, 7 p.m., Hadley Senior Center, 23 Maple St., Hadley. Patricia Nugent, author of Before They Were Mothers, discusses the role of women in our society during times of challenges and before “Rosie the Riveter.” The book was conceived when the author realized, at her mother’s funeral, that she knew very little about her mother’s life before her mother was a mother. This journal takes a look at the universal themes which threads the lives of women of long ago – arranged marriages, the role of faith and religion, healing and medical advances along with poverty and prejudice. We will begin at 5:30pm with a potluck dinner. Please bring your own place setting and a dish to pass. Our speaker will be Lawrence Dudley, who recently wrote a book titled New York Station. This is a spy thriller set in the 1940s. The book has a local connection- the Saratoga racing meet figures in the story. The public is welcome to attend.
