Golfers have a new place to hit the greens at any time of year with the opening of the new AndersMattsonGolf indoor golf studio.

Local golf instructor Anders Mattson, previously the director of instruction at Saratoga National Golf Club, is now teaching at his own year-round indoor golf studio at 62 Excelsior Ave. Saratoga Springs.

AndersMattsonGolf, which first opened in May, is a 3,500-squarefoot, full-year indoor golf facility with an emphasis on training and junior programming.

Built in the former auto parts section of the longtime Stark’s garage, AndersMattsonGolf features an 800-square-foot putting green, chipping area, club fitting from Titleist and a small retail section as well as two TrackMan radar-based launch monitors. These feedback instruments, which Mattson calls “the best in the business,” collect and provide players with data on the movement of the ball and the club with each user’s swing.

“We use that information to help people improve their golf swings or their golf shots,” Matt

son explained, noting that there are also different golf courses from around the globe that people can play through the system. “It’s pretty neat,” he said. “It’s as close as you can get to golf without being outside, which is necessary up here.”

After developing a large student base at the Saratoga National Golf Academy, which he originally helped form, Mattson identified the need to move indoors during colder months. Then when the company’s off-season facility on Broadway was slated to become an apartment complex, Mattson decided to create a new indoor golf studio in Saratoga Springs.

“I saw the need to be inside and to have a homebase year-round,” Mattson said on why he started the new studio, his first entrepreneurial endeavor. “Knowing the weather up in Northeastern New York, I realized that we were better being inside than outside.”

In the new space, Mattson hosts junior programming three to four days a week, along with individual instruction sessions.

Mattson’s accolades include three-time NENY PGA Teacher of the Year, being named one of Golf Digest’s Best Teachers in New York, and serving as a lead coach for The Golf Channel Academy, a network of carefully selected, top-tier golf coaches across the country.

This weekend, Mattson is taking a local PGA Junior League All-Star Team to Cape Cod to compete in regionals for a chance to go to the national championship.

Mattson often works with another local golf teacher, Bob Cain, who will also be part of the AndersMattsonGolf instruction team.

As a Saratogian, Mattson is glad that his new business can be part of the renovation of the city’s Excelsior Avenue corridor. “I really am excited about the area,” he said. “Being a part of that project is very cool.”

Being a member of the Saratoga community is important to Mattson, who said he’s seen strong support for AndersMattsonGolf from the community and the local golfing population, including a sponsorship relationship with the New Country Lexus of Latham.

Looking ahead to the future of AndersMattsonGolf, Mattson’s goal is simple: “to help people get better at golf and enjoy the sport,” he said.

Currently open by appointment only, Mattson is putting the finishing touches on the studio’s interior and exterior.

A grand opening for AndersMattsonGolf is anticipated for this fall. Then in the winter, the studio will begin hosting regular open practice hours when people can work on their golf game.

Lessons with Mattson can be booked online or by phone.
