UAlbany women’s soccer drops Cornell, 1-0

University at Albany junior Hailey Summers scored her first career goal Sunday to propel the Great Danes to victory over the visiting Cornell Big Red 1-0. Summers’ goal in the 88th minute came on a broken play in the Cornell penalty box, where the defender was able to find the ball and rip a shot into the back of the net to break the scoreless tie. Cornell had entered the game undefeated, winning each of their first four games of the season. Red-shirt junior Meghan Cavanaugh (Clifton Park/ Shenendeho­wa H.S.) had two shots for the Great Danes in the win Sunday. She has started in five games this year, recording a goal and two assists. Junior forward/defender Kendra Harbinger (Clifton Park/ Shenendeho­wa H.S.) also started for UAlbany, the sixthtime this fall. Also on the Great Danes roster is sophomore forward/defender Amanda O’Brien (Clifton Park/ Shenendeho­wa H.S.) who has appeared on one game this season for UAlbany. ST. ROSE PLAYS TO 1-1 TIE WITH SAINT ANSELM ALBANY - The College of Saint Rose, ranked #16in the first regular-season United Soccer Coaches National Poll, outshot Saint Anselm 3-1in the two extra sessions only to settle for a 1-1draw in this afternoon’s Northeast-10 Conference opener for both squads. Freshman forward Olivia Boucher ran he goal scoring streak to three matches and junior keeper Marika Laurendeau recorded six saves for the Golden Knights (3-0-1 0-0-1 NE10). To date senior forward/midfielder Morgan Burchardt (Burnt Hills/Burnt HillsBalls­ton Lake H.S.) has appeared and started in one game for the Golden Knights, earning an assist. Freshman midfielder/back Loryn Donvito (Colonie/South Colonie H.S.) has started and appeared on one game this year for the College of St. Rose. NO. 7 ST. ROSE DROPS CALDWELL, 2-1 ALBANY, N.Y.-The College of Saint Rose scored two goals eight minutes apart midway through the second half to complete a 2-1come-from-behind win in its home opener versus Caldwell. The Golden Knights (4-0), ranked #7in the most recent United Soccer Coaches East Region Poll, manufactur­ed a 14-10 shot advantage and a 9-4 corner kick differenti­al throughout the afternoon. “I was proud of the team’s resiliency today against a talented Caldwell side. We went down early on an unlucky goal, but stuck to the game plan and played our game. There were some great positives to take from this match, but we need to continue to improve as we inch closer to conference play,’ said head coach John Ciano. Representi­ng Section 2on the Golden Knights roster are sophomore forward Kevin Vargas (Troy/Troy H.S.) who has started two games to date for Saint Rose along with rostered players freshman Sebastian Maynard (South Glens Falls/South Glens Falls H.S.) and sophomore David Hamlin (Troy/LaSalle Institute). ST. MICHAEL’S COLLEGE OFF TO 1-4 START THIS SEASON The Saint Michael’s College women’s volleyball team went 1-4this week in a packed schedule. The Purple Knights lost their home opener against Middlebury College, 3-0, on Tuesday. The Purple and Gold then traveled to the Kutztown (Pa.) University Classic for four weekend matches. The Purple Knights split their Friday matches, losing to host Kutztown, 3-0, and beating Salem (W.Va.) University, 3-0, for their first win of the season. On Saturday, Saint Michael’s fell to Notre Dame (Ohio) College, 3-0, and Goldey-Beacom (Del.) College, 3-0. Sophomore middle blocker Grace Fornabia (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Catholic Central H.S.) finished with three kills for the Purple Knights. ST. MICHAEL’S DROPS SAINT ANSELM, 5-2 FOR 1ST WIN The Saint Michael’s College women’s tennis team bested Saint Anselm College, 5-2, on Saturday during Northeast-10 Conference play, giving firstyear head coach Tom Twitchell his first victory as a college coach. Sophomore Brittany Katz (Ballston Lake/Burnt HillsBalls­ton Lake) recorded a 6-4, 6-3win at No. 2for the Purple Knights.
