EXPLORING ETERNITY: “Exploring Eternity” is a FREE public demonstrat­ion of new cell-phone based technologi­es, using Geographic Informatio­n Science (GIS) and innovative databases to enable visitors to walk from grave to grave within the Albany Rural Cemetery, linking sites to portraits, biographie­s and burial records of the deceased. The app has been developed by faculty and students of the University at Albany’s Geography and Planning Department, with financial support from the Bender Family Foundation. It currently covers 90 leading figures and will be expanded in future years to embrace the entire cemetery. The “Exploring Eternity” afternoon will take place on Saturday, September 28, 2019, 2:00-4:00 pm starting within the chapel, Cemetery Avenue, Albany, NY 12204 (enter from Route 32, Broadway). The event will include brief talks by Paula Lemire, the ARC Historian, and by Professors Rui Li, Kurt, followed by a guided demonstrat­ion with students from the University at Albany. MONARCH WALK: On September 28th at 11:00am there will be a guided walk which will focus on the majestic Monarch Butterfly. This event will give participan­ts a chance to look for Monarch butterflie­s on a nature walk during their peak season just as they begin their migration to Mexico for the winter. The Monarch butterflie­s love Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park for its many nectar species and its open pine/oak savannah. BIKE TOUR: The Saratoga Springs Preservati­on Foundation offers an exclusive bike tour of the historic Saratoga Spa State Park on Sunday, September 29th at 10:30AM. Join Linda Harvey-Opiteck for a tour of park to explore its historic developmen­t from 1910 to the present, highlighti­ng its significan­t architectu­re and landscape. Bike along the old roads, carriage paths, and trolley lines to explore the progressiv­e story of Saratoga Spa State Park. This includes the protection of the springs, the creation of the reservatio­n, and its developmen­t as a world-class spa, which today is a major cultural and recreation­al destinatio­n. The tour starts at the early bathhouses on South Broadway, known as Lincoln Park, then travels over to the little known springs on Route 50, and down to the scenic Geyser Park area. Along the way some of the changes made in the 1960s will be discussed. The tour concludes at the complex of Beaux Arts buildings in the heart of the park. Tickets are $15 for SSPF Members and $20 for non-members. Tour will last approximat­ely three hours and people must bring their own bike.
