Fall Lecture Luncheon to feature author, editor Pamela Paul

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. >> Author and editor Pamela Paul, New York Times Book Review editor and host of The Book Review Podcast, is set to speak at Saratoga Performing Arts Center’s 15th annual fall Lecture Luncheon.

Her presentati­on, titled “My Life in Literature: an Intimate Conversati­on” will be the centerpiec­e of the upcoming Lecture Luncheon, scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 17 at the Spa Little Theater and the Hall of Springs in Saratoga Spa State Park. Events will begin at 9:30 a.m.

Moderated by SPAC president and CEO Elizabeth Sobol, the discussion will feature the stories that have shaped Paul’s life, while also exploring her latest books How to Raise a Reader and My Life with Bob: Flawed Heroine Keeps Book of Books, Plot Ensues.

Presented by SPAC’s Action Council, the fundraiser also includes a coffee and tea welcome reception, gourmet luncheon and boutique shopping at the Hall of Springs.

“As a voracious reader and lover of the New York Times’ Book Review and podcast, I am excited to be bringing Pamela Paul to Saratoga,” Sobol said in a press release. “A special thanks to the Action Council for making this highly anticipate­d event, which directly supports SPAC’s expanding education program, possible.”

As editor of The New York Times Book Review, Paul oversees books coverage at The New York Times, which she joined in 2011 as the children’s books editor. She is the host of the weekly Book Review podcast for The Times and the author and editor of six books, most recently, How to Raise a Reader and My Life with Bob: Flawed Heroine Keeps Book of Books, Plot Ensues. Her first book, The Starter Marriage and the Future of Matrimony, was named one of the best books of 2002 by The Washington Post; her second book, Pornified, was named one of the best books of 2005 by The San Francisco Chronicle. Her third book, Parenting, Inc., an investigat­ion of the childreari­ng business and the commercial­ization of early childhood, was published in 2008. Her fourth book, By the Book: Writers on Literature and the Literary Life was published in 2015.

Paul is a former columnist for The Economist, Worth magazine and The New York Times Styles section and a former contributo­r to Time magazine. Her work has appeared in The Atlantic, The Washington Post, The New York Times Magazine, The New York Times Education Life, Slate, Vogue, Psychology Today, Brown Alumni Magazine and other national publicatio­ns. She began her career as the editor of the Parent Publishing program at Scholastic. In 2015, she won Girls Write Now’s Gamechange­r Award.

The Action Council raises more than $250,000 annually for SPAC’s world-class classical music, dance and children’s programmin­g. Past speakers for the

event have included celebrated author of The End of Your Life Book Club, Will Schwalbe, New York Times bestsellin­g author Andrew Gross, award-winning NPR host and correspond­ent Jacki Lyden, acclaimed novelist Elizabeth Brundage, historian David Garrard Lowe, and literary dramatist Betty Spinelli.

Cost to attend the fundraiser is $85 per person and includes admission to the breakfast, lecture, Hall of Springs luncheon and mini-boutique shopping event. Nearly 20 local shops and boutiques will be on site with an assortment of fine accessorie­s, gifts, apparel, and specialty foods for sale.
