NORTHEAST SKI & CRAFT BEER SHOWCASE: The Northeast Ski & Craft Beer Showcase will feature an all-new lineup of local and regional brews, wines and cider when it returns to the Albany Capital Center on November 1-3, 2019. The Saratoga Eagle Craft Beer Garden, presented by Great Lakes Brewing Company, will be open Friday from 4 to 8:30 p.m., Saturday from noon to 5:30 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 3:30 p.m. (must be 21 years of age or older with valid ID). Additional­ly, guests will be able to enjoy two varieties of mimosas, apple cider and orange, on Sunday from 10 a.m. to noon. Sampling tickets are $6 for three samples of any craft beer, wine or cider selections (cash only). Sunday mimosa specials are available for $8 per serving. VETERANS BALL: The fourth annual Veterans Ball is scheduled for 5 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 3 at the Hall of Springs, located at 108 Avenue of the Pines. This course teaches participan­ts how to make a natural Gourd Bird Feeder. During the introducti­on, numerous examples of raw and finished gourds will be shown. The first part of the class will be devoted to preparatio­n and planning, and the cleaning and preparatio­n of both interior and exterior surface of the gourd will be covered in detail. Various tools and materials will be used, including scouring pads, steel wool, power drills and saws, Dremel tools, scrapers, sanding materials and more. Students will cut out and sand down one to four large openings in the upper half of their gourd. After a rigorous interior scraping preparatio­n of the gourd, numerous painting and drawing techniques will be discussed and demonstrat­ed, including wet and dry brush, sponge, stencil and others. After the base is dry, students will decorate their own gourds. Once complete, the gourds will be coated with polyuretha­ne and made ready to hang. Come create a beautiful 12-18” hardwood cutting board during two, half-day sessions. The class will discuss the types of wood being used, such as sappala, purple heart, African cherry and hard maple. The wood will be cut to size on a table saw. Then, using a jointer, students will make sure all pieces are the same size before gluing the various pieces together and allowing them to dry overnight. On the second day, the class will use planers to ensure that all boards are level and the same thickness. Students will then use a router to create a well and handles. This basket serves equally well as a tabletop display filled with seasonal items, or as a wall basket, with an “ear” woven into the back for hanging. The basket is woven in the plain weave method with a solid bottom. Several methods of filling a solid bottom will be discussed. The body of the basket incorporat­es a chain weave woven with dyed round reed in the student’s choice of colors. The basket is finished with a braided and scalloped rim, woven with matching dyed reed. A choice of a hand-painted ceramic accent embellishe­s the basket in coordinati­ng colors with holiday themes.
