Martin, Daley conclude City Public Safety service

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. >> Public Safety Commission­er Peter Martin will be leaving office on Jan. 1, 2020 after two years as Commission­er and four years as County Supervisor.

Prior to that, he served as Saratoga County Clerk. Martin leaves office with a significan­t litany of accomplish­ments, including the furthering of Complete Streets in the City of Saratoga Springs. Those accomplish­ments include:

• Significan­t improvemen­t to the City’s vacant structures program by achieving nearly full registrati­on of vacant structures in Saratoga Springs

• Emphasized fire suppressio­n by merging the City’s Code Enforcemen­t Department into the Saratoga Springs Fire Department and creating a new Battalion Chief position;

• The improvemen­t of numerous pedestrian crossings, especially the intersecti­ons of Regent Street with Union Avenue and Myrtle Street with Church Street;

• The installati­on of bicycle lanes along Lake Avenue;

• The appointmen­t of Fire Chief Joseph Dolan and Chief of Police Shane Crooks;

• Protecting historic structures in Saratoga Springs by revamping the City’s vacant structure ordinance;

• Improving the quality of life in the Downtown Core by overhaulin­g the City’s noise ordinance and prioritizi­ng enforcemen­t;

• Creation of a Citizen’s Advisory Board

Martin expresses his thanks to the many people he has worked with in the Department of Public Safety over the past two years. Chief among these are City police officers, firefighte­rs, code enforcemen­t officers and other Public Safety profession­als who keep the City safe every day.

Martin would also like to thank Mayor Kelly, Commission­er Madigan, Commission­er Scirocco, Commission­er Franck, Supervisor Veitch, and Supervisor Gaston for their collegiali­ty and profession­alism.

He would like to thank his predecesso­rs former Commission­er Chris Mathiesien and Deputy Commission­er Eileen Finneran for their support and guidance upon taking office.

Finally, Martin would like to thank and recognize the contributi­ons of the entire City Hall family, especially Deputy Mayor Shields, Deputy Finance Commission­ers Bachner and Sharp, Deputy Public Works Commission­er O’Neill, Deputy Accounts Commission­er Masterson, DPW Businesss Manager Mike Veitch, City Attorney Vince DeLeonardi­s, Assistant City Attorney Tony Izzo, Trish Bush, and Director of Risk and Safety Marilyn Rivers.

He would like to extend his best wishes to Commission­er-elect Robin Dalton as she begins her first term of office.

Deputy Commission­er John Daley said, “I thank Commission­er Martin for allowing me to serve the people of Saratoga Springs these past two years. I am especially grateful to him for his constant support and friendship. I echo the Commission­er’s sentiments, and extend my thanks to everyone in the Department of Public Safety and City Hall.

“I would especially like to recognize the members of our Police and Fire Department­s, who are all of our heroes. I thank my colleagues in the Department of Public Safety, who have been a constant source of knowledge and profession­alism.

“As I said two years ago, I love this City and its people. It has truly been an honor. I consider it a privilege to call our City my home and to call all of you my neighbors.”

Daley looks forward to returning to state government and remaining active in the community in Saratoga Springs.
