THOROUGHBREDS FALL IN BIG GREEN SCREAM
Skidmore drops final home game to Clarkson, 74-63
SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY » The Skidmore College men’s basketball team lost their final home game of the year on Saturday, against the Clarkson Golden Knights, 74-63.
The Thoroughbreds were fighting to come back the entire game, and they got close. An overturned call midway through the second half completely reversed all the momentum they had going.
After a couple of fouls that didn’t go in Skidmore’s favor, the referees overturned a halfcourt violation call, giving the ball back to Clarkson. “It was a pivotal play in the game, but I’ll never blame the officials. We did not shoot the ball well and against them you gotta make some shots with the amount of switching they do,” said head coach Joe Burke. “We just didn’t shot well from the foul line or from three. One for fifteen from the three point arc isn’t gonna win you many games.”
With the 74-63 loss, Skidmore drops to 7-16 overall on the season and 6-10 in their conference.
“We’ve been really inconsistent. It’s been a tough year,” said Burke. “We’re just not doing the little things.”
Tautvydas Kupstas, a fresh
man, and Ty Lamport, a junior, each had 17 points in the game, leading the way for the Thoroughbreds. Lamport also had 8 rebounds. Greg Skoric was able to contribute with 8 points and 9 rebounds, while Ryan Murunge had 9 points and 5 rebounds
“We’re very young. We don’t use it as an excuse, but we only have three upperclassmen. So we’re trying to learn a lot on the fly,” said Burke.
Skidmore’s two seniors, Jordan Cole and Pat Gallagher likely played their final game on their home court, at they are currently on the outside of the playoff picture. There are two regular season away games remaining on the schedule, February 21 at RIT (Rochester, NY) and February 22 at Hobart College (Geneva, NY).
Prior to the men’s game, the women’s team was able to defeat Clarkson by a score of 66-40. Lilly Berg had a double-double, with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Kate McCarney nearly got to a triple-double, but fell a few rebounds and assists shy. She had 13 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists. Jessica Centore also had 13 points.
